Gauge symmetry breaking in gauge theories---In search of clarification [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2011
The paper investigates the spontaneous breaking of gauge symmetries in gauge theories from a philosophical angle, taking into account the fact that the notion of a spontaneously broken local gauge symmetry, though widely employed in textbook expositions of the Higgs mechanism, is not supported by our leading theoretical frameworks of gauge quantum ...

Random Learning Leads to Faster Convergence in ‘Model‐Free’ ILC: With Application to MIMO Feedforward in Industrial Printing

open access: yesInternational Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing, EarlyView.
The cost as a function of the number of experiments for a non‐symmetric 21×21$$ 21\times 21 $$ system. Four approaches are shown: the proposed stochastic conjugate gradient ILC (SCGILC) method (), deterministic conjugate gradient ILC (), stochastic gradient descent ILC () and deterministic gradient descent ILC ().

Noncommutative gauge symmetry in the fractional quantum Hall effect

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics
We show that a system of particles on the lowest Landau level can be coupled to a probe U(1) gauge field A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ μ in such a way that the theory is invariant under a noncommutative U(1) gauge symmetry.

Dark discrete gauge symmetries [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review D, 2011
We investigate scenarios in which dark matter is stabilized by an abelian Z_N discrete gauge symmetry. Models are surveyed according to symmetries and matter content. Multi-component dark matter arises when N is not prime and Z_N contains one or more subgroups.

Conformal symmetry in quantum gravity

open access: yesEuropean Physical Journal C: Particles and Fields
We study the problem of how to derive conformal symmetry in the framework of quantum gravity. We start with a generic gravitational theory which is invariant under both the general coordinate transformation (GCT) and Weyl transformation (or equivalently,

Gauge-Symmetry Violation Quantum Phase Transition in Lattice Gauge Theories [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Gauge symmetry plays a key role in our description of subatomic matter. The vanishing photon mass, the long-ranged Coulomb law, and asymptotic freedom are all due to gauge invariance. Recent years have seen tantalizing progress in the microscopic reconstruction of gauge theories in engineered quantum simulators.

T-Duality versus Gauge Symmetry [PDF]

open access: yesProgress of Theoretical Physics Supplement, 2011
We review the recently constructed `double field theory' which introduces in addition to the conventional coordinates associated to momentum modes coordinates associated to winding modes. Thereby, T-duality becomes a global symmetry of the theory, which can be viewed as an `O(D,D) covariantization' of the low-energy effective space-time action of ...

Reducible Stueckelberg symmetry and dualities

open access: yesPhysics Letters B, 2021
We propose a general procedure for iterative inclusion of Stueckelberg fields to convert the theory into gauge system being equivalent to the original one. In so doing, we admit reducibility of the Stueckelberg gauge symmetry.

Symmetry breaking of gauge theories down to Abelian sub-groups [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2008
I re-derive the lowest order effective Lagrangian for electro-weak symmetry breaking without the use of Goldstone's theorem for spontaneously broken global symmetries and without the assumption of a custodial symmetry. I consider the breaking of a local symmetry with gauge group G down to an Abelian sub-group K and construct a gauge-invariant ...
