Stacking-induced fluorescence increase reveals allosteric interactions through DNA [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
From gene expression to nanotechnology, understanding and controlling DNA requires a detailed knowledge of its higher order structure and dynamics. Here we take advantage of the environment-sensitive photoisomerization of cyanine dyes to probe local and ...

Mapping the evolution of mitochondrial complex I through structural variation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Respiratory complex I (CI) is crucial for bioenergetic metabolism in many prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is composed of a conserved set of core subunits and additional accessory subunits that vary depending on the organism. Here, we categorize CI subunits from available structures to map the evolution of CI across eukaryotes. Respiratory complex I (CI)

The Role of Genes in Defining a Molecular Biology of PTSD [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Because environmental exposure to trauma is the sine qua non for the development of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), the recent focus on genetic studies has been noteworthy. The main catalyst for such studies is the observation from epidemiological

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Sex and Genotype Modulate the Dendritic Effects of Developmental Exposure to a Human-Relevant Polychlorinated Biphenyls Mixture in the Juvenile Mouse

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience, 2021
While many neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) are thought to result from interactions between environmental and genetic risk factors, the identification of specific gene-environment interactions that influence NDD risk remains a critical data gap.

Gene-environment interaction between body mass index and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGFβ1) gene in knee and hip osteoarthritis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Introduction: The objective was to investigate potential gene-environment interaction between body mass index (BMI) and each of eight TGFβ1 polymorphisms in knee and hip osteoarthritis (OA).

Plasmodium falciparum gametogenesis essential protein 1 (GEP1) is a transmission‐blocking target

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows Plasmodium falciparum GEP1 is vital for activating sexual stages of malarial parasites even independently of a mosquito factor. Knockout parasites completely fail gamete formation even when a phosphodiesterase inhibitor is added. Two single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (V241L and S263P) are found in 12%–20% of field samples.

Gene variants with suicidal risk in a sample of subjects with chronic migraine and affective temperamental dysregulation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
BACKGROUND: Risk factors for suicide are at least partially heritable and functional polymorphisms of targeted genes have been suggested to be implicated in the pathogenesis of this phenomenon.

Linked dimers of the AAA+ ATPase Msp1 reveal energetic demands and mechanistic plasticity for substrate extraction from lipid bilayers

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells must clear mislocalized or faulty proteins from membranes to survive. The AAA+ ATPase Msp1 performs this task, but dissecting how its six subunits work together is challenging. We engineered linked dimers with varied numbers of functional subunits to reveal how Msp1 subunits cooperate and use energy to extract proteins from the lipid bilayer ...
