Subversion of host immune surveillance is a crucial step in viral pathogenesis. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) encodes two immune evasion gene products, BCRF1 (viral IL-10) and BPLF1 (deubiquitinase/deneddylase); both proteins suppress antiviral immune ...

The Sorcerer II Global Ocean Sampling Expedition: metagenomic characterization of viruses within aquatic microbial samples. [PDF]
Viruses are the most abundant biological entities on our planet. Interactions between viruses and their hosts impact several important biological processes in the world's oceans such as horizontal gene transfer, microbial diversity and biogeochemical ...

Dietary energy drives the dynamic response of bovine rumen viral communities
Background Rumen microbes play a greater role in host energy acquisition than that of gut-associated microbes in monogastric animals. Although genome-enabled advancements are providing access to the vast diversity of uncultivated microbes, our ...

Assessment of viral community functional potential from viral metagenomes may be hampered by contamination with cellular sequences [PDF]
Although the importance of viruses in natural ecosystems is widely acknowledged, the functional potential of viral communities is yet to be determined. Viral genomes are traditionally believed to carry only those genes that are directly pertinent to the ...

Virioplankton assemblages from challenger deep, the deepest place in the oceans
Summary: Hadal ocean biosphere, that is, the deepest part of the world’s oceans, harbors a unique microbial community, suggesting a potential uncovered co-occurring virioplankton assemblage.

Gene transfer by viral vectors for gene therapy [PDF]
The search for useful virus vectors and for improvements in currently available retrovectors which may have the capability of transportation by natural transport systems in the human body will open effective ways for targeting human genes to specific cells in tissues in situ.

Resisting viral infection: the gene by gene approach [PDF]
This review focuses on genes required for resistance to mouse cytomegalovirus (MCMV), as identified through unbiased genetic screening. Components of the developmental, sensing, and effector pathways, functioning in multiple cell types, were detected by infecting 22,000 G3 mutant mice with MCMV at an inoculum easily contained by WT animals.

Background Polydnaviruses (PDVs) are mutualistic endogenous viruses inoculated by some lineages of parasitoid wasps into their hosts, where they facilitate successful wasp development.

Complete genome viral phylogenies suggests the concerted evolution of regulatory cores and accessory satellites. [PDF]
We consider the concerted evolution of viral genomes in four families of DNA viruses. Given the high rate of horizontal gene transfer among viruses and their hosts, it is an open question as to how representative particular genes are of the evolutionary ...

In contrast to human cells, very few HSV-1 genes are known to be spliced, although the same pre-mRNA processing machinery is shared. Here, through global analysis of splice junctions in cells infected with HSV-1 and an HSV-1 mutant virus with deletion of
