A novel mathematical framework for pedigree-based calculation of Y-STR match probabilities

open access: yesScientific Reports
Y-chromosomal short tandem repeat (Y-STR) markers are routinely used in forensic casework to identify male donors of biological traces left at crime scenes, particularly in sexual assault cases.

Environmental DNA surveys can determine in-stream dominance of non-native brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis over native brown trout Salmo trutta

open access: yesEcological Indicators
For effective management of established potentially invasive species it is important to find management target sites (e.g. for depletion or eradication measures). In Sweden, the brook charr is non-native and competes with the native brown trout.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Body fluid identification using a targeted mRNA massively parallel sequencing approach : results of a EUROFORGEN/EDNAP collaborative exercise [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In a previous study we presented an assay for targeted mRNA sequencing for the identification of human body fluids, optimised for the Illumina MiSeq/FGx MPS platform. This assay, together with an additional in-house designed assay for the Ion Torrent PGM/

Identification of pathogenic neisseriae by genetic transformation [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Medical Microbiology, 1980
The detection of pathogenic neisseriae by genetic transformation of a naturally occurring proline auxotroph of Neisseria gonorrhoeae strain F62 is described. Of 169 clinical isolates of N. gonorrhoeae, approximately 90% gave a positive transformation assay. Twelve clinical isolates of N.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Identification of Nonlinear Time Lag Systems by Improved Genetic Algorithm [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
In this paper. a new identification method is proposed which can obtain a good accuracy of identification of nonlinear time lag system on the basis of combination of genetic algorithm and sequence method.

Stable RNA markers for identification of blood and saliva stains revealed from whole genome expression analysis of time-wise degraded samples [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Human body fluids such as blood and saliva represent the most common source of biological material found at a crime scene. Reliable tissue identification in forensic science can reveal significant insights into crime scene reconstruction and can thus ...
