Food for Thought: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis on the Effects of Ultra‐Processed Foods on Cognition in Children and Adolescents

open access: yesFood Frontiers, EarlyView.
Across 35 studies, this systematic review and meta‐analysis explored the link between ultra‐processed foods (UPFs) and cognition. For children, higher consumption of UPFs was associated with poorer attention, executive functioning, fluid intelligence, and language; for adolescents, higher UPF consumption was associated with poorer executive functioning,

Transcriptomic profiling of pancreatic alpha, beta and delta cell populations identifies delta cells as a principal target for ghrelin in mouse islets

open access: yesDiabetologia, 2016
Aims/hypothesisIntra-islet and gut–islet crosstalk are critical in orchestrating basal and postprandial metabolism. The aim of this study was to identify regulatory proteins and receptors underlying somatostatin secretion though the use of transcriptomic

Exploring the Molecular Pathways Underlying the Anti‐Diabetic Effects of Millets

open access: yesFood Safety and Health, EarlyView.
Millet consumption may modulate gluconeogenesis and glycolysis, enhance glucose transporter activity, increase leptin levels, inhibit the NF‐κB pathway, and mitigate oxidative and nitrosative stress. ABSTRACT Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemic conditions resulting from inadequate insulin production or ...

Ghrelin and vascular protection [PDF]

open access: yesVascular Biology, 2019
Ghrelin is a small peptide with important roles in the regulation of appetite, gut motility, glucose homeostasis as well as cardiovascular protection. This review highlights the role that acyl ghrelin plays in maintaining normal endothelial function by maintaining the balance of vasodilator-vasoconstrictor factors, inhibiting inflammatory cytokine ...

Cancer anorexia: hypothalamic activity and its association with inflammation and appetite-regulating peptides in lung cancer [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Background Energy homeostasis is mediated by the hypothalamus, whose inflammation-induced functional derangements contribute to the onset of anorexia in cancer.

Plasma ghrelin levels in lean and obese humans and the effect of glucose on ghrelin secretion.

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, 2002
Ghrelin, a novel GH-releasing peptide isolated from human and rat stomach, stimulates food intake and GH secretion. We determined plasma ghrelin concentrations in patients with simple obesity, anorexia nervosa, and type 2 diabetes mellitus by RIA.

scRiskCell: A single‐cell framework for quantifying islet risk cells and their adaptive dynamics in type 2 diabetes

open access: yesiMeta, EarlyView.
scRiskCell is an interpretable intelligent computational framework that leverages nearly 500,000 islet cell expression profiles from 106 donors across different continuous disease states. By calculating the intrinsic relationship between donor disease states and cell expression profiles, it assigns a pseudo‐cell state index to each cell.

Ghrelin and reproductive disorders [PDF]

open access: yesMolecular and Cellular Endocrinology, 2011
Ghrelin is an important factor involved in most of the metabolic and hormonal signals which adapt the reproductive functions in conditions of altered energy balance. Moreover, the coordinated role of leptin and ghrelin appears in fact to have a specific role in the regulation of puberty.

In ovo Administration of Ghrelin and Subsequent Prolactin Level in Newly Hatched Chicks

open access: yesThe Journal of Poultry Science, 2011
Ghrelin is a prolactin (PRL)-releasing factor in animal species. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of in ovo ghrelin administration on plasma PRL levels in hatched chicks. We divided 350 fertilized eggs into 7 groups: group T1 as the

Therapeutic Potential of Targeting the Ghrelin Pathway

open access: yesInternational Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2017
Ghrelin was discovered in 1999 as the endogenous ligand of the growth-hormone secretagogue receptor 1a (GHSR1a). Since then, ghrelin has been found to exert a plethora of physiological effects that go far beyond its initial characterization as a growth ...
