Giant Liposome Microreactors for Controlled Production of Calcium Phosphate Crystals
Langmuir, 2004Calcium phosphates are among the most important biominerals in living organisms, where they play both a mechanical and a calcium storage role. Their growth in vivo is under strong biological control, and this process occurs in closed spaces. Our aim in this paper is to describe a microreactor system able to control the mineralization process within ...

Electroformation of giant liposomes from spin-coated films of lipids
Colloids and Surfaces B: Biointerfaces, 2005This paper describes spin-coating of solutions of lipids and using the resulting thin films for electroformation of giant liposomes. Spin-coating made it possible to generate uniform films of lipids with controllable thickness over large surfaces (>25 cm(2)) of indium tin oxide. Establishing a range of thicknesses optimal for electroformation (25-50 nm)

Phospholipase A2 promotes raft budding and fission from giant liposomes
Chemistry and Physics of Lipids, 2004Cellular processes involving membrane vesiculation are related to cellular transport and membrane components trafficking. Endocytosis, formation of caveolae and caveosomes, as well as Golgi membranes traffic have been linked to the existence and dynamics of particular types of lipid/protein membrane domains, enriched in sphingolipids and cholesterol ...

Adhesion of Giant Liposomes as Observed by Light Microscopy
Langmuir, 1997Giant liposomes composed of 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC) and cholesterol are imparted with cationic or anionic charge by incorporation of 2−20% cationic or anionic lipids. Although two giant liposomes of like charge do not adhere, two giant liposomes of opposite charge will (depending upon the % of ionic lipid) either adhere ...

Polymer-induced shape changes and capping in giant liposomes
Chemistry and Physics of Lipids, 1995We studied the coupling of a polymeric amphiphile undergoing a transition from an expanded to a collapsed state of the hydrophilic polymer chain upon heating above 29°C with free and solid supported lipid bilayers. Lateral diffusion measurements and studies of vesicle shape-changes confirmed previous calorimetric studies, suggesting that the amphiphile

Enhanced uptake of giant DNA in cell-sized liposomes
Chemical Physics Letters, 2003We have studied the spontaneous formation of giant liposome from dry lipid film under an aqueous solution of long DNA molecules, T4DNA 165 kbp. The number density of DNAs entrapped inside liposomes formed with 10 mM Mg2+ solution is one order of magnitude higher than that in the bulk solution.

Preparation and some properties of giant liposomes and proteoliposomes.
Journal of biochemistry, 1987Optimal conditions for formation of giant liposomes and proteoliposomes were investigated. A suspension of small unilamellar vesicles made of various phospholipids in a buffer of 0-3 M KCl, 0.1 mM EDTA, and 20 mM MOPS (pH 7.0) was subjected to a freeze-thaw treatment. Giant multilamellar liposomes of diameter ranging from 10 to 60 microns were found to
