Freeze-thaw cycles induce content exchange between cell-sized lipid vesicles

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2018
Early protocells are commonly assumed to consist of an amphiphilic membrane enclosing an RNA-based self-replicating genetic system and a primitive metabolism without protein enzymes.

An intelligent liposome that may deliver drug molecules in a well controlled fashion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The passage of molecules, especially large ones, through the cellular membrane is a very important problem for some biotechnological applications, such as drug delivery.

A novel biomimetic liposome drug delivery system mediated by macrophage targeting for precision treatment of encephalitis

open access: yesBMEMat, EarlyView.
An advanced macrophage‐mediated biomimetic liposome (AC‐LP@RAW) that can penetrate the BBB and precisely target inflammatory sites in the deep brain was established in this study based on the unique immune homing property of macrophages, and showed a significantly improved delivery of curcumin to the brain.

Viscoelasticity Measurements inside Liposomes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Microrheology, the study of the behavior of fluids on the microscopic scale, has been and continues to be one of the most important subjects that can be applied to characterize the behavior of biological fluids.

Inherited metabolic epilepsies–established diseases, new approaches

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView.
Abstract Inherited metabolic epilepsies (IMEs) represent the inherited metabolic disorders (IMDs) in which epilepsy is a prevailing component, often determining other neurodevelopmental outcomes associated with the disorder. The different metabolic pathways affected by individual IMEs are the basis of their rarity and heterogeneity.

Membrane fusion of secretory vesicles and liposomes Two different types of fusion [PDF]

open access: yes, 1981
Secretory vesicles isolated from adrenal medulla were found to fuse in vitro in response to incubation with Ca2+. Intervesicular fusion was detected by electron microscopy and was indicated by the appearance of twinned vesicles in freeze-fractured ...

Dietary and biomarker‐guided strategies as supportive measures in the fragile X syndrome

open access: yesFood Biomacromolecules, EarlyView.
Abstract The fragile X syndrome (FXS) is an inherited neurodevelopmental disorder that primarily affects males, often resulting in an IQ below 55, while about two‐thirds of females also experience intellectual disability. Physical features may include an elongated face, prominent ears, finger joint laxity, and enlarged testes in males.

Mechanical response of adherent giant liposomes to indentation with a conical AFM-tip.

open access: yesSoft Matter, 2015
Indentation of giant liposomes with a conical indenter is described by means of a tension-based membrane model. We found that nonlinear membrane theory neglecting the impact of bending sufficiently describes the mechanical response of liposomes to ...

Iflaviruses in arthropods: when small is mighty

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Many arthropod species harbor iflaviruses, which often cause covert (asymptomatic) infections, but may still affect host fitness. We review the impact of iflaviruses on arthropod fitness, immunity, behaviour as well as the iflavirus’ host range, transmission, tissue tropism and the interactions with other microorganisms within arthropods.
