A bioactive peptide amidating enzyme is required for ciliogenesis
The pathways controlling cilium biogenesis in different cell types have not been fully elucidated. We recently identified peptidylglycine α-amidating monooxygenase (PAM), an enzyme required for generating amidated bioactive signaling peptides, in ...

The c-terminal extension of a hybrid immunoglobulin A/G heavy chain is responsible for its Golgi-mediated sorting to the vacuole [PDF]
We have assessed the ability of the plant secretory pathway to handle the expression of complex heterologous proteins by investigating the fate of a hybrid immunoglobulin A/G in tobacco cells.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Total Synthesis of (–)-Anaferine: A Further Ramification in a Diversity-Oriented Approach
The piperidine ring is a widespread motif in several natural bioactive alkaloids of both vegetal and marine origin. In the last years, a diversity-oriented synthetic (DOS) approach, aimed at the generation of a library of piperidine-based derivatives ...

Molecular bases of circadian magnesium rhythms across eukaryotes
Circadian rhythms in intracellular [Mg2+] exist across eukaryotic kingdoms. Central roles for Mg2+ in metabolism suggest that Mg2+ rhythms could regulate daily cellular energy and metabolism. In this Perspective paper, we propose that ancestral prokaryotic transport proteins could be responsible for mediating Mg2+ rhythms and posit a feedback model ...

A model for the self-organization of vesicular flux and protein distributions in the Golgi apparatus [PDF]
The generation of two non-identical membrane compartments via exchange of vesicles is considered to require two types of vesicles specified by distinct cytosolic coats that selectively recruit cargo and two membrane-bound SNARE pairs that specify fusion ...

The organization and function of the Golgi complex has intrigued cell biologists for many years (Farquhar and Palade, 1998 ; Mazzarello and Bentaivoglio, 1998 ). This is due both to the Golgi’s central role in secretory membrane traffic and sorting, and to its unique structure and dynamics.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...
