Misorientation effect of grain boundary on the formation of discontinuous precipitation in second and third generation single crystal superalloys

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2014
[001] tilt artificial grain boundaries of Ni-based single crystal superalloys CMSX-4 and DD10 have been prepared by self-diffusion bonding. The microstructural stability of 0 ∼ 30∘ artificial grain boundaries have been investigated after heat treatment ...

Interactions between Molten High‐Silicon Electrical Steels and Carbon‐Bonded MgO Refractories Based on Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines how several molten high‐silicon electrical steels interact with both conventional and recycled MgO–C refractories. For this, various immersion experiments are conducted. In addition to infiltration, a number of mechanisms are identified and explained that control the corrosion of the refractory material.

Unveiling electron scattering mechanism at Al-doped grain boundaries in Cu interconnects

open access: yesMaterials & Design
Doping by capping layers followed by thermal diffusion is an effective way to improve electromigration reliability in Cu interconnects and extend the lifetime of electronic devices.

A Grain Boundary Regulates the Friction Behaviors between Graphene and a Gold Substrate

open access: yesCrystals, 2019
The nanofriction of graphene is critical for its broad applications as a lubricant and in flexible electronics. Herein, using a Au substrate as an example, we have investigated the effect of the grain boundary on the nanofriction of graphene by means of ...

Tilt Grain-Boundary Effects in S- and D-Wave Superconductors

open access: yes, 1998
We calculate the s- and d-wave superconductor order parameter in the vicinity of a tilt grain boundary. We do this self-consistently within the Bogoliubov de Gennes equations, using a realistic microscopic model of the grain boundary.

Interaction between Molten Al‐Killed Mn–B Steel and Carbon‐Bonded MgO Refractories Based on Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
High‐temperature interactions between low‐sulfur Al‐killed Mn–B steel and MgO–C refractories (0 and 50 wt% recyclates) are studied via finger immersion tests (1600 °C). Surface‐active elements influence infiltration. MgO/CaS layer forms, along with spinel and calcium silicate.

Quantifying the Energetics and Length Scales of Carbon Segregation to Fe Symmetric Tilt Grain Boundaries Using Atomistic Simulations

open access: yes, 2013
Segregation of impurities to grain boundaries plays an important role in both the stability and macroscopic behavior of polycrystalline materials. The research objective in this work is to better characterize the energetics and length scales involved ...

CONDUCTIVITY AND NEGATIVE-U FOR IONIC GRAIN-BOUNDARIES [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
The authors show that charge-transfer excitations (like 2M2+ to M++M3+) can be lowered greatly in energy near grain boundaries, where sites are no longer equivalent.

A Thermodynamic 3D Model for the Simulation of Diffusion‐Controlled Alloying Processes in Heterogeneous Material Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A numerical model resulting from irreversible thermodynamics for describing transport processes is introduced, focusing on thermodynamic activity gradients as the actual driving force for diffusion. Implemented in CUDA C++ and using CalPhaD methods for determining the necessary activity data, the model accurately simulates interdiffusion in aluminum ...

Zein‐Based Adhesives: Sustainable Extraction and Application in Bioadhesive Technologies

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Zein is extracted from corn gluten meal using a simple and scalable process with high yield (~90%). The resulting protein is applied in bioadhesives modified with Ca2+ and Fe3+ ions, exhibiting substrate‐dependent adhesion. The findings demonstrate competitive bonding performance and highlight the role of ionic interactions in tuning adhesion ...
