Effects of Hot Compression on Grain Boundary Evolution and Twin Boundary Characteristics on the Material Properties of Inconel 617 Alloy

open access: yesMetals
The evolution of grain size and special grain boundary in Inconel 617 alloy was analyzed by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). It was found that during hot compression, dynamic recrystallization (DRX) occurs, the grain size changes, and a twinning ...

Influence of Sample Preparation and Processing Procedures on the Thermal Diffusivity of MgO‐C Refractories

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The thermal diffusivity of MgO‐C refractories is highly sensitive to sample preparation and processing procedures. In this article, the effects of coking sequence, machining conditions, structural inhomogeneity, and graphite coating application on measurements using laser flash apparatus are systematically investigated.

Grain boundaries in semiconductors

open access: yesJournal of Physics C: Solid State Physics, 1985
This review presents the available experimental and theoretical understanding on the structure and electronic properties of grain boundaries in semiconducting materials. High-resolution electron microscope images of interfaces are interpreted within the framework of the structural unit model of grain boundaries, and the electronic properties of the ...

Machine learning determination of atomic dynamics at grain boundaries

open access: yes, 2018
In polycrystalline materials, grain boundaries are sites of enhanced atomic motion, but the complexity of the atomic structures within a grain boundary network makes it difficult to link the structure and atomic dynamics.

Investigation of Laser Ablation and Brush Pre‐Treatments for AlCu Cold Roll Bonding in Oxygen‐Free Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
It is shown that laser ablation pretreatment under oxygen‐free conditions enables copper–aluminium bonding at significantly lower deformation degrees and improved properties compared to mechanical brushing. Laser ablation further increases interface contact area and induces favourable residual stress states and microstructural compatibility ...

Microstructural Evolution and Vacancy Defect Formation in Mn–Mo–Ni RPV Steel Under Low Cycle Fatigue: Insights From EBSD and PALS

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Low‐cycle fatigue damage in Mn–Mo–Ni reactor pressure vessel steel is examined using a combined electron backscatter diffraction and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy approach. The study correlates texture evolution, dislocation substructure development, and vacancy‐type defect formation across uniform, necked, and fracture regions, providing

Small-angle Al2O3 grain boundaries achieve ultralow oxygen diffusion

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Ceramics
Al2O3 is extensively utilized as an oxidant barrier in aeroengines and gas turbines at elevated temperatures, and small-angle grain boundaries significantly reduce its oxygen permeation.

What limits supercurrents in high temperature superconductors? A microscopic model of cuprate grain boundaries

open access: yes, 2009
The interface properties of high-temperature cuprate superconductors have been of interest for many years, and play an essential role in Josephson junctions, superconducting cables, and microwave electronics.

Characterization of Nitinol Produced by Laser Powder Bed Fusion for Mechanical Metamaterial Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Stabilization of L‐PBF Ni50.7Ti49.3 under low‐cycle loading was investigated. Recoverable strain after cycling was dependent on the amount of applied load. Recovery ratio was 53.4% and 35.1% at intermediate and high load, respectively. The maximum total strain reached 10.3% at a high load of 1200 MPa.

EBSD Study of Creep‐Induced Lattice Misorientation in MgO‐Particle‐Reinforced Austenitic Steel Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Creep experiments at 900°C on coarse‐grained steel‐ceramic composites containing recycled magnesia reveal that higher ceramic volume fractions significantly enhance the creep resistance. Detailed EBSD investigations identify subgrain formation in the steel matrix as the dominant deformation mechanism.
