Grain boundaries of nanophase materials [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
Several iron alloys with nanometer-scale grain sizes were prepared by mechanical attrition in a high energy ball mill. Mossbauer spectrometry was used to measure the internal hyperfine magnetic fields. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and transmission electron

Composition‐Tuned Enhancement of the Anomalous Nernst Effect in FeCo–Pt Thin Films on Rigid and Flexible Substrates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Disordered (Fe50Co50)1−xPtx thin films exhibit a pronounced anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) with a strong composition dependence on both rigid and flexible substrates. The transverse thermoelectric response peaks near 22.5 at.% Pt, accompanied by enhanced αxy/σxy scaling, thermal transport, and ANE sensitivity.

Combined Process‐ and Phase‐Field‐Simulation to Predict the Microstructure of Single‐Crystal Ni‐Based Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A combined finite element and phase‐field approach predicts the evolution of microstructure during the directional solidification of Ni‐based superalloys. The model reveals how withdrawal rate, temperature gradient, and wall thickness control the dendrite spacing, highlighting the strong effect of surface regions in thin sections where dendrite growth ...

Powder Optimization Strategies for Binder Jetting Printing of BaTiO3 and Ba0,6Sr0,4TiO3 Ceramics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Powder optimization is investigated to enable binder jetting of BaTiO3 and Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 ferroelectric ceramics. The antagonistic relationship between flowability and binder compatibility is addressed through binder impregnation of granulated powders and fumed silica addition to fine powders.

Structure and dynamics of two-dimensional binary colloidal polycrystals and fluids

open access: yes, 2022
The structural and dynamic behaviour of two-dimensional binary colloidal polycrystals and fluids are studied through optical microscopy and optical tweezing. Firstly, grain size evolution in an impurity doped polycrystalline monolayer is studied. A model

Small-angle Al2O3 grain boundaries achieve ultralow oxygen diffusion

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Ceramics
Al2O3 is extensively utilized as an oxidant barrier in aeroengines and gas turbines at elevated temperatures, and small-angle grain boundaries significantly reduce its oxygen permeation.

Low‐Angle Grain Boundaries and Re‐Segregation in Single‐Crystalline Ni‐Base Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates that Re‐segregation at low‐angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) in Ni‐base superalloys is influenced by misorientation angle. Advanced microscopy and atom probe tomography reveal that higher misorientation angles increases Re‐segregation.

Investigation of Surface Grooves from Migrating Grain Boundaries

open access: yes, 2002
Visible-light microscopy (VLM) and atomic-force microscopy (AFM) were used to study the progression of grain-boundary grooving and migration in high-purity alumina (Lucalox™).

Grain boundaries in vortex matter [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We explore the statistical properties of grain boundaries in the vortex polycrystalline phase of type-II superconductors. Treating grain boundaries as arrays of dislocations interacting through linear elasticity, we show that self-interaction of a ...
