Infant Botulism and Carbohydrate Blood Group Antigens: Preliminary Results from a Discordant Twin Study

open access: yesJournal of Pediatrics: Clinical Practice
Objective: We investigated if specific carbohydrate blood group antigens were associated with infant botulism (IB) among discordant twins and triplets.

Early‐life high‐fat diet exposure increases Achilles tendon stiffness and induces transcriptomic alterations

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Early‐life exposure to a high‐fat diet altered intact Achilles tendons in rat offspring, making them thinner, stiffer, and molecularly distinct even without injury. These findings suggest that developmental high‐fat diet exposure may impair tendon quality and increase susceptibility to mechanical overload or tendon injury later in life.

Paradox of hypercholesterolaemia in highly trained, keto-adapted athletes

open access: yesBMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine, 2018
Objective A growing number of ultra-endurance athletes have switched to a very low-carbohydrate/high-fat eating pattern. We compared markers of cholesterol and the lipoprotein profile in a group of elite ultra-runners consuming a high-carbohydrate (HC ...

Transcriptome analyses reveal reduced hepatic lipid synthesis and accumulation in more feed efficient beef cattle [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
peer-reviewedThe genetic mechanisms controlling residual feed intake (RFI) in beef cattle are still largely unknown. Here we performed whole transcriptome analyses to identify differentially expressed (DE) genes and their functional roles in liver ...

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...

Effect of a high carbohydrate pre-exercise meal on metabolic and performance-related parameters in male athletes following two different strategies to improve fat utilization: An exploratory examination

open access: yesAdvanced Exercise and Health Science
The purpose of this additional examination of a larger intervention was to determine the effects of a carbohydrate-rich pre-exercise meal on metabolic and performance-related parameters in a group of male endurance athletes, who had previously followed ...
