Growth Plate Senescence and Catch-Up Growth [PDF]

open access: bronze, 2011
Longitudinal bone growth is rapid in prenatal and early postnatal life, but then slows with age and eventually ceases. This growth deceleration is caused primarily by a decrease in chondrocyte proliferation, and is associated with other structural, functional, and molecular changes collectively termed growth plate senescence.

Growth-inhibiting conditions slow growth plate senescence [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Endocrinology, 2010
The mammalian growth plate undergoes programmed senescence during juvenile life, causing skeletal growth to slow with age. We previously found that hypothyroidism in rats slowed both growth plate chondrocyte proliferation and growth plate senescence, suggesting that senescence is not dependent on age per se but rather on chondrocyte proliferation ...

Effect of Allium fistulosum Extracts on the Stimulation of Longitudinal Bone Growth in Animal Modeling Diet-Induced Calcium and Vitamin D Deficiencies

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2021
Allium fistulosum is a perennial plant species grown worldwide belonging to the family Liliaceae. In Korean medicine, it is referred to as Chongbaek (CB), and it is prescribed for symptoms associated with the common cold due to its antipyretic properties.

Smad4 regulates growth plate matrix production and chondrocyte polarity. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Smad4 is an intracellular effector of the TGFβ family that has been implicated in Myhre syndrome, a skeletal dysplasia characterized by short stature, brachydactyly and stiff joints.

A Global Plate Model Including Lithospheric Deformation Along Major Rifts and Orogens Since the Triassic [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Global deep‐time plate motion models have traditionally followed a classical rigid plate approach, even though plate deformation is known to be significant.

Response to comment on 'Palovarotene reduces heterotopic ossification in juvenile FOP mice but exhibits pronounced skeletal toxicity'

open access: yeseLife, 2019
We respond to concerns expressed by Pacifici and Shore (2019) about a recent paper (Lees-Shepard and Goldhamer, 2018a) in which we reported that the drug palovarotene can have severe side effects in a mouse model of fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.

Buckling of a growing tissue and the emergence of two-dimensional patterns [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The process of biological growth and the associated generation of residual stress has previously been considered as a driving mechanism for tissue buckling and pattern selection in numerous areas of biology.

Bone wax in the treatment of partial epiphysiodesis of distal femoral growth plate: Case report at 10-year follow-up

open access: yesFrontiers in Surgery, 2022
The growth plate is the weakest structure in the skeleton of a child and a frequent site of injury or fracture; physeal injuries represent 15%–30% of all fractures in children.

A Computed Microtomography Method for Understanding Epiphyseal Growth Plate Fusion

open access: yesFrontiers in Materials, 2018
The epiphyseal growth plate is a developmental region responsible for linear bone growth, in which chondrocytes undertake a tightly regulated series of biological processes. Concomitant with the cessation of growth and sexual maturation, the human growth

Effects of Astragalus Extract Mixture HT042 on Circulating IGF-1 Level and Growth Hormone Axis in Rats

open access: yesChildren, 2021
Astragalus extract mixture HT042 is a standardized functional food granted by the Korean FDA for promoting “Children’s Height Growth”. In this study, we determined whether HT042 affects circulatory Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) after ...
