Whole genome sequencing of historical specimens from the world's largest fungal collection yields high‐quality assemblies

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 251, Issue 2, Page 752-767, July 2026.
Summary High‐throughput molecular studies of museum specimens (museomics) have great potential in biodiversity research, but fungal historical collections have scarcely been examined, leading to no comprehensive methodological assessments. Here we present a whole genome sequencing (WGS) project conducted at the Fungarium of the Royal Botanic Gardens ...

Histidine Ethylation by Histidine Methyltransferases SETD3 and METTL9

open access: yesChemBioChem, Volume 27, Issue 12, 26 June 2026.
Enzyme assays and computational analyses reveal that human histidine methyltransferases SETD3 and METTL9 have a capacity to catalyze histidine ethylation in the presence of synthetic or in situ produced S‐adenosylethionine (AdoEth) and Se‐adenosylselenoethionine (AdoSeEth) cosubstrates.

Hydroquinone Oxidation by Redox‐active Guanidines and Thioguanidines: Faster Conversion to High‐Potential Than to Low‐Potential Quinones

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, Volume 32, Issue 24, 23 June 2026.
New redox‐active oligothioguanidines are developed and used in dehydrogenative P–P coupling reactions and hydroquinone oxidations. Tetrathioguanidino‐ and tetraguanidinobenzenes oxidize high‐potential halogenated hydroquinones faster than relatively low‐potential hydroquinone.

Comprehensive Biophysical Profiling Evidences Self‐Oligomerization of Bacterially Expressed Pc Protein

open access: yesChemBioChem, Volume 27, Issue 11, 15 June 2026.
Polycomb (Pc), a core component of Polycomb Repressive Complex 1 (PRC1), is largely intrinsically disordered yet forms buffer‐ and concentration‐dependent higher‐order assemblies. Integrative biophysical analysis and cryo‐electron microscopy reveal dynamic, heterogeneous oligomers, whereas AlphaFold modeling suggests that structural organization is ...

Optimisation of a Novel Class of DNA Gyrase Inhibitors to Improve Antibacterial Activity

open access: yesChemMedChem, Volume 21, Issue 11, 15 June 2026.
This article describes efforts to increase the antibacterial activity of a recently reported class of novel DNA gyrase inhibitors known as the isoquinoline sulphonamides by improving their uptake in bacterial cells. As antibiotic resistance continues to rise, the need for new antibacterials is clear.
