The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Feeding practices and growth among young children during two seasons in rural Ethiopia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
BACKGROUND: The use of indices of infant and young child feeding practices to predict growth has generated inconsistent results, possibly through age and seasonal confounding.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Yields and qualities of pigeonpea varieties grown under smallholder farmers’ conditions in Eastern and Southern Africa [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Pigeonpea is one of the few crops with a high potential for resource-poor farmers due to its complementary resource use when intercropped with maize.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Effect of iron application methods on grain yield and iron concentration of rice under different nitrogen levels [PDF]

open access: yesActa Agriculturae Serbica, 2023
Rice is a staple cereal crop that helps food security and overcomes nutrition problems. The application of synthetic nitrogen (N) fertilizers results in the improvement of nutrient concentration.

Evaluating the Potential of Using 5-Azacytidine as an Epimutagen [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
A number of early flowering lines were induced when 5-azacytidine was applied to germinating flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) seed. The genetics of these lines indicate that the induced changes are epigenetic and probably result from demethylation of the ...

Studies on the Varietal Difference of Harvest Index in Rice. Relationship between harvest index and morphological characteristics and leaf color.

open access: yesJapanese Journal of Crop Science, 2000
To find useful indexes for the selection of new rice varieties having a high harvest index, the correlation of harvest index (HI) with morphological characteristics and leaf color was examined using 60 Japanese varieties (J group) and 20 high-yielding varieties bred in Asian countries (H group).

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Evaluation and identification of wheat hybrids for wider adaptability

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Plant Breeding, 2017
The experimental material comprising F1, F2, BC1 and BC2 generations derived from crosses involving five parents were evaluated to find out stability in bread wheat under four environments.
