More of the Same Makes a Difference: Comparative Anatomy and Molecular Makeup of Tenrec and Hedgehog Intestines

Tenrecs and hedgehogs have gastrointestinal tracts of comparable morphology, yet with marked differences in length. Among mammals, intestinal length is correlated with diet; however, these species share a common trophic niche. The length differences are accounted for by an expansion of the small intestine in the European hedgehog.
