Conformation of the Helix—Coil—Helix Polypeptide [PDF]
Semi-empirical energy calculations were performed to determine the conformation of the α-helix—random coil—α-helix polypeptide. The random-coil region includes only one amino acid residue in these calculations. The results are illustrated by conformational energy maps.

In this issue of Structure, Zhang and colleagues compare the helix-helix interaction spaces of an extensive database of soluble and membrane proteins. Intriguingly, the resultant clusters show similar helix interaction geometries between the protein classes, differing in detail only by patterns of local interactions and inter-helical distances.

Spare parts for helix–helix interaction [PDF]
About 6000 contact regions (patches) of helix-to-helix packing from 300 well-resolved non-homologous protein structures were considered.
