Heme oxygenase in pregnancy and preeclampsia [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension, 2013
Emerging evidence supports an important role for the heme oxygenase system in the maintenance of a healthy pregnancy. This review attempts to collect these wide-ranging data and summarize the recent progress in the field.New studies looking at heme oxygenase depletion in a variety of animal models have demonstrated that the heme oxygenase system is an ...

Endothelial HO-1 induction by model TG-rich lipoproteins is regulated through a NOX4-Nrf2 pathway [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Circulating levels of chylomicron remnants (CMRs) increase postprandially and their composition directly reflects dietary lipid intake. These TG-rich lipoproteins likely contribute to the development of endothelial dysfunction, albeit via unknown ...

Role of Heme Oxygenase as a Modulator of Heme-Mediated Pathways [PDF]

open access: yesAntioxidants, 2019
The heme oxygenase (HO) system is essential for heme and iron homeostasis and necessary for adaptation to cell stress. HO degrades heme to biliverdin (BV), carbon monoxide (CO) and ferrous iron. Although mostly beneficial, the HO reaction can also produce deleterious effects, predominantly attributed to excessive product formation. Underrated so far is,

Protective Effects of Ellagic Acid Against Arsenic-Induced Hepatotoxicity in Male Wistar Rats: Impact of Heme Oxygenase-1 Upregulation. [PDF]

open access: yesFood Sci Nutr
Arsenic (As), a widespread environmental toxic substance, one of arsenic's clinical signs is liver damage. Ellagic acid protects liver toxicity as well as injuries induced by arsenic, and up‐regulates HO‐1 expression. Ellagic acid has a pharmacological characteristic, including anti‐inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Synthetic Bilirubin‐Based Nanomedicine Protects Against Renal Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury Through Antioxidant and Immune‐Modulating Activity

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, Volume 14, Issue 7, March 14, 2025.
BX‐001N, a polyethylene glycol‐conjugated bilirubin 3α nanoparticle, is the first GMP‐grade, synthetic bilirubin‐based nanomedicine. It effectively attenuates acute renal injury, facilitates subacute renal recovery, and suppresses chronic fibrosis after renal ischemia/reperfusion injury via anti‐oxidant and immune‐modulating activity.

Oxidative stress in Duchenne muscular dystrophy: focus on the NRF2 redox pathway [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Oxidative stress is involved in the pathogenesis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), an X-linked genetic disorder caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene and characterized by progressive, lethal muscle degeneration and chronic inflammation.

A comparison of melatonin and α-lipoic acid in the induction of antioxidant defences in L6 rat skeletal muscle cells. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Aging is characterized by a progressive deterioration in physiological functions and metabolic processes. The loss of cells during aging in vital tissues and organs is related to several factors including oxidative stress and inflammation.
