Background: The aim of the present study was to determine the existence of sensitization to the fungus Hemileia vastatrix (coffee leaf rust) in a sample of the Brazilian population. This fungus attacks coffee plantations, and in some regions of Brazil the concentration of its spores in the air can be very high.

Hemileia vastatrix1 is the cause of rust disease of coffee, and there have been many investigations of its life cycle. This rust is characterized by the formation of non-resting teliospores which germinate in situ and produce sporidia, which, however, are unable to reinfect coffee, which suggests that they are non-functional2–4.

Germination of the uredospores of Hemileia vastatrix can occur only in the presence of liquid water, either in the dark or in light of low intensity, the latter stimulating the onset of germination at low, but not at optimal temperatures. On agar the optimum is 22° C, the minimum 15·5° and the maximum 28·5°.

Possible insect vectors of the uredospores of Hemileia vastatrix in Kenya

Evidence is presented that two species of parasitic Hymenoptera, Leptacis kivuensis and Synopeas sp., are vectors of the uredospores of the coffee leaf-rust fungus Hemileia vastatrix Berk. & Br. in Kenya. Their chief importance is probably in carrying the initial spore inoculum to new plantations remote from other coffee.

6. Variation for incomplete resistance to Hemileia vastatrix in Coffea arabica

Variation for incomplete resistance to coffee leaf rust was studied in Coffea arabica. Disease level in the field was scored by a 0 to 9 scale. Components of resistance observed in laboratory and greenhouse tests were latency period (LP), lesion density (LD) and leaf retention period (LRP). LRP determines the duration of sporulation.
