Hepatitis B virus-induced hepatocellular carcinoma: The role of the virus x protein

open access: yesActa virologica, 2013
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignant diseases and has the fourth highest mortality rate worldwide. Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has been identified as a major risk factor in HCC. Currently available evidence support a critical role of hepatitis B virus x (HBx) gene and protein in the pathogenesis of HBV ...

Rab1A Promotes Hepatic Steatosis by Suppressing Mitophagy via the Raf‐1/ERK1/2/PINK1 Signaling Axis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Why does fat accumulate in the liver? Our study reveals Rab1A as the molecular switch that silences the cell's mitochondrial cleanup crew. Turning Rab1A off reactivates mitophagy, clears excess fat, and reverses fatty liver disease in mice—offering a promising new therapeutic target for MASLD, a growing global health challenge.

Identification of novel neutralizing determinants for protection against HCV

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
Identification of novel neutralizing determinants for protection against hepatitis C virus. Abstract Background and Aims HCV evasion of neutralizing antibodies (nAb) results in viral persistence and poses challenges to the development of an urgently needed vaccine.

Adaptation of hepatitis C virus to mouse CD81 permits infection of mouse cells in the absence of human entry factors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) naturally infects only humans and chimpanzees. The determinants responsible for this narrow species tropism are not well defined.

X Protein of Hepatitis B Virus Resembles a Serine Protease Inhibitor [PDF]

open access: yesJapanese Journal of Cancer Research, 1990
The × protein of hepatitis B virus (HBV) has been shown to be a trans‐activator for viral and cellular genes. Amino acid sequences in × protein were found to be highly homologous to functionally essential sequences in the “Kunitz domain,’characteristic of Kunitz‐type serine protease inhibitors.

Modulation of miR‐23b Wnt/β‐catenin Axis Strengthens Endothelial Barrier Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Early blood‐brain barrier (BBB) disruption contributes to stroke and CNS disease pathology. miR‐23b was identified as a regulator of BBB integrity in brain endothelial cells. Inhibition of miR‐23b enhanced barrier‐associated properties, promoted repair‐related signaling, and reduced BBB leakage in experimental stroke models, supporting further ...

c‐Rel–dependent Chk2 signaling regulates the DNA damage response limiting hepatocarcinogenesis

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
In response to genotoxic injury, c‐Rel upregulates ATM‐Chk2‐p53 pathway DNA damage proteins to limiting hepatocarcinogenesis. Abstract Background and Aims Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer‐related death. The NF‐κB transcription factor family subunit c‐Rel is typically protumorigenic; however, it has recently been reported as a

Stimulation requirement and pathogenetic significance of T cells during chronic viral hepatitis. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C virus (HCV) are important causes of liver inflammation and fibrosis. More than 500 million people are persistently infected worldwide and consequently are at increased risk of developing chronic liver disease ...

Molecular basis of telaprevir resistance due to V36 and T54 mutations in the NS3-4A protease of the hepatitis C virus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Background The inhibitor telaprevir (VX-950) of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) protease NS3-4A has been tested in a recent phase 1b clinical trial in patients infected with HCV genotype 1. This trial revealed residue mutations that confer varying degrees of

Hepatitis B Virus X Protein Promotes Degradation of SMC5/6 to Enhance HBV Replication

open access: yesCell Reports, 2016
The hepatitis B virus (HBV) regulatory protein X (HBx) activates gene expression from the HBV covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA) genome. Interaction of HBx with the DDB1-CUL4-ROC1 (CRL4) E3 ligase is critical for this function.
