A Clinical Case of Acute Herpesvirus and Pneumocystis Co-infection in a Patient with Progressive Pulmonary Tuberculosis [PDF]

open access: yesКлиническая микробиология и антимикробная химиотерапия, 2016
This article describes a clinical case of fatal polymicrobial pneumonia in a patient with progressive pulmonary tuberculosis. The clinical case represents a co-infection with tuberculosis, viral and pneumocystis infection in a HIV-uninfected patient with

An analysis of the linked decisions in the confiscation of illegally traded turtles

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
Increased enforcement of laws governing the international trade of freshwater turtles is increasing the numbers of confiscated turtles. Decision makers are thus increasingly faced with a complex decision, involving multiple linked agencies, regarding the disposition of turtles of unknown origin and disease status, which creates uncertainty about the ...

Applications of CRISPR-Cas-Based Genome Editing Approaches Against Human Cytomegalovirus Infection

open access: yesBiomedicines
Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), a globally ubiquitous herpesvirus with the ability to carry out both lytic productive and lifelong latent infections, is a major cause of congenital infections, often leading to intellectual disabilities and neurological ...

The relationship between pityriasis rosea, seasonal factors, and other herpetic infections: A time series analysis

open access: yesDermatologica Sinica, 2019
Background: Data on seasonal variation and viral etiology in Pityriasis rosea (PR) have been conflicting. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of PR and other herpetic infections, taking seasonal changes into account.

Acute neurologic presentation of a 2‐year‐old standardbred colt with multicentric diffuse large B cell lymphoma

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, EarlyView.
Summary Lymphoma in horses is uncommon and rarely diagnosed as a cause of ataxia. This case report describes a 2‐year‐old Standardbred cryptorchid colt who presented with acute onset of grade 3–4/5 spinal ataxia in all four limbs, with the hindlimbs more severely affected than forelimbs and severe proprioceptive deficits.

Applying CRISPR Technologies for the Treatment of Human Herpesvirus Infections: A Scoping Review

open access: yesPathogens
Background: Human herpesviruses are double-stranded DNA viruses of which eight types have been identified at present. Herpesvirus infection comprises an active lytic phase and a lifelong latency phase with the possibility of reactivation.

CD1d expression and invariant NKT cell responses in herpesvirus infections

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2015
Invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells are a highly conserved subset of unconventional T lymphocytes that express a canonical, semi-invariant T cell receptor (TCR) and surface markers shared with the natural killer cell lineage.

Borna disease virus infection: Retrospective case series of five horses and two donkeys in Switzerland

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, EarlyView.
Summary Borna disease is an acute to subacute, rarely chronic non‐purulent meningoencephaylomyelitis affecting mainly horses and sheep. This case series describes the clinical signs, diagnosis, treatment, outcome and post‐mortem findings of five horses and two donkeys with this condition. The equids affected were geldings or mares of various breeds and

Silent pressure: Unveiling spinal lymphoma in horses and its parallels to other species

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, EarlyView.
Summary Though the nervous system is an uncommon location for lymphoma, the disease should remain a differential diagnosis in some cases of ataxia in equids. Diagnosis of lymphoma can be challenging, although a combination of cytology, histopathology and immunophenotyping can aid in definitive diagnosis and therefore more accurately guide treatment and

Sensitive detection systems for infectious agents in xenotransplantation*

open access: yesXenotransplantation, EarlyView., 2020
Abstract Xenotransplantation of pig cells, tissues, or organs may be associated with transmission of porcine microorganisms, first of all of viruses, to the transplant recipient, potentially inducing a disease (zoonosis). I would like to define detection systems as the complex of sample generation, sample preparation, sample origin, time of sampling ...
