A Review and Meta-Analysis of Influenza Interactome Studies

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2022
Annually, the influenza virus causes 500,000 deaths worldwide. Influenza-associated mortality and morbidity is especially high among the elderly, children, and patients with chronic diseases.

Preferences of Pediatric Patients and Their Caregivers for Chemotherapy‐Induced Nausea and Vomiting Control Endpoints: A Mixed Methods Study

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Purpose Although not always achieved, complete chemotherapy‐induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) control is the conventional goal of CINV prophylaxis. In this two‐center, mixed‐methods study, we sought to understand the preferences of adolescent patients and family caregivers for CINV control endpoints.

Development of Broad-Spectrum Antiviral Agents—Inspiration from Immunomodulatory Natural Products

open access: yesViruses, 2021
Developing broad-spectrum antiviral drugs remains an important issue as viral infections continue to threaten public health. Host-directed therapy is a method that focuses on potential targets in host cells or the body, instead of viral proteins.

Thoracic duct drainage before and after cadaveric kidney transplantation [PDF]

open access: yes, 1979
Twenty-seven consecutive recipients of cadaveric kidneys, including five with pre-existing warm cytotoxic antibodies, were treated with thoracic duct drainage before and after transplantation.

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Eukaryotic translation initiation machinery can operate in a prokaryotic-like mode without eIF2 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Unlike prokaryotes, a specialized eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2), in the form of the ternary complex eIF2*GTP*Met-tRNAiMet is utilized to deliver the initiator tRNA to the ribosome within all eukaryotic cells1.

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Topical Simvastatin as Host-Directed Therapy against Severity of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Mice. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We recently demonstrated that statins mediate protection against intracellular pathogens, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Listeria monocytogenes in mice.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Current status of intestinal transplantation in children [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
Purpose: A clinical trial of intestinal transplantation (Itx) under tacrolimus and prednisone immunosuppression was initiated in June 1990 in children with irreversible intestinal failure and who were dependent on total parenteral nutrition (TPN ...
