Suppression of the HPA axis during extrahepatic biliary obstruction induces cholangiocyte proliferation in the rat

open access: yes, 2012
Cholestatic patients often present with clinical features suggestive of adrenal insufficiency. In the bile duct-ligated (BDL) model of cholestasis, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is suppressed.

Syncing Health Timing: Exploring the Interplay of Circadian Rhythms, Obesity, and Cardiovascular Diseases

open access: yesFood Safety and Health, EarlyView.
Circadian rhythm disruption impairs metabolic regulation, appetite control, and vascular function, promoting obesity and cardiovascular diseases. Evidence highlights a bidirectional relationship where metabolic disorders further disturb circadian timing.

Complement C3 mediates adolescent social isolation‐induced hippocampal synaptic deficits and sex‐specific emotional dysfunction

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Medicine, EarlyView.
Adolescent social isolation disrupts hippocampal function and exacerbates emotional symptoms, with sex‐specific patterns, as shown by human studies. In mice, social isolation decreased hippocampal synaptic density and calcium signaling, upregulated complement proteins, and activated complement‐mediated microglial synaptic phagocytosis.

Endogenous monoamine oxidase inhibitory activity and HPA activation in the pig

open access: yes, 1999
Previously we have shown that an increase in endogenous monoamine oxidase A inhibitory activity (MAO-AI), measured in human saliva, both precedes and predicts psychological stress-induced activation of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis, as ...

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Substance Use: The Mediating Role of Executive Function Deficits

open access: yesJournal of Adolescence, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction While adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are robust risk factors for adolescent substance use, the prospective neurocognitive pathways linking both cumulative and specific adversities to substance use remain understudied. This study tested a vulnerability model by examining whether executive function (EF) deficits mediate the ...

Oxytocin and HPA stress axis reactivity in postpartum women

open access: yes, 2015
Lactation is thought to buffer stress reactivity via oxytocin (OT). Dysregulation of the HPA axis has been reported in women with postpartum depression (PPD).

Interventions for pre‐school children in foster care: A systematic review of the foster carer and system level outcomes from randomised controlled trials

open access: yesJCPP Advances, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Children in foster care are at increased risk of experiencing cognitive, emotional and behavioural difficulties. There is a window of opportunity for early intervention associated with developmental sensitivity in the early years. Foster carers and the systems supporting them play a central role in intervention and support for the ...

Steroidopathies and hormonal imbalance in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder

open access: yesJCPP Advances, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition with a multifactorial etiology, many aspects of which remain unclear. Emerging evidence suggests a potential association between ASD and clinical manifestations resulting from hormonal imbalances, henceforth named “steroidopathies.” The present study aims to ...

Food Insecurity was Associated With Poorer Sleep Quality and Increased Stress Among Dental Students at a HBCU and a Predominantly White School

open access: yesJournal of Dental Education, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Purpose The prevalence of food insecurity (FI) and its associated outcomes among undergraduate students have been widely researched, however studies focusing on FI among professional students are limited. This study investigated the associations between FI, sleep‐related variables, and stress among dental students from predominantly Black and ...

Update on stress and depression: the role of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Psychiatry, 2003
Over the past 50 years, relationships between stress and the neurobiological changes seen in psychiatric disorders have been well-documented. A major focus of investigations in this area has been the role of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis,
