The ageing holobiont: crosstalk between telomere dynamics, oxidative stress and the gut microbiome

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The gut tissue is at the frontline of early onset of ageing. It exhibits high cell turnover rates and rapid telomere shortening, which can have systemic effects on the developing or senescing organism. We conducted a literature review of studies on the crosstalk between telomere length dynamics, telomerase activity, oxidative stress, and gut ...

Food and the circadian activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, 1997
Temporal organization is an important feature of biological systems and its main function is to facilitate adaptation of the organism to the environment. The daily variation of biological variables arises from an internal time-keeping system.

On the importance of including both sexes in animal studies – insights from home‐cage monitoring

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT A review of behavioural studies using home‐cage monitoring (HCM) systems revealed that over 61% of studies used only male subjects, with only 24% including both sexes, despite evidence of substantial behavioural differences between male and female animals. This bias could influence the outcomes of biomedical research.

Elimination Profile of Deflazacort and Metabolites in Urine and Plasma Following Oral Administration: Relevance to Sports Drug Testing

open access: yesDrug Testing and Analysis, EarlyView.
Results confirm that the MRL of 30 ng/mL for 21‐desacetyl‐deflazacort together with a 3‐day washout period is an appropriated strategy to detect oral deflazacort administration in sport competition. ABSTRACT Deflazacort (DEF) is a glucocorticoid prohibited in sports competitions when orally administered.

Adaptive Modifications of Maternal Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis Activity during Lactation and Salsolinol as a New Player in this Phenomenon

open access: yesInternational Journal of Endocrinology, 2018
Both basal and stress-induced secretory activities of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis are distinctly modified in lactating females. On the one hand, it aims to meet the physiological demands of the mother, and on the other hand, the ...

Dynamic geo‐hydrogeological monitoring‐driven situational awareness for real‐time floor water inrush risk prediction in deep mining

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The fused data extracted from the distributed monitoring system as the data basis, combined with dynamic geological data, are imported into a deep learning model. As the geological conditions of mining and excavation change, the risk of water inrush at the working face is retrieved in real time.

Associations Between Microbial Depletion and Autonomic Dysregulation in Binge‐Eating Disorder

open access: yesInternational Journal of Eating Disorders, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective The interplay between the gut microbiome and autonomic nervous system remains unexplored in binge‐eating disorder (BED). We aimed to explore specific microbial alterations in BED and examine their potential association with cardiac vagal tone as a distinct bio‐behavioral phenotype.

Sleep, Neuroendocrine Disorders, And the Bidirectional Relationship between the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis: A Mini-Review

open access: yesJournal of Applied Sciences and Environmental Management
This review explores the intricate and bidirectional relationships between the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, sleep architecture and regulation, and the manifestation of various neuroendocrine disorders. The HPA axis, a critical component of
