Historical Aspects of Human Milk Oligosaccharides [PDF]

open access: yesAdvances in Nutrition, 2012
This review focuses on important observations regarding infant health around 1900 when breastfeeding was not considered a matter of importance. The discovery of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria and their relevance for health and disease was an important milestone leading to a decrease in infant mortality in the first year of life.

Microbiota Signatures in Early Life and Their Association With Food Allergy: A Systematic Review

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Food allergy (FA) is increasing worldwide, and early life may be a critical window for immune training. We systematically reviewed observational human studies linking early‐life microbiota (infant, maternal, environmental, or extraintestinal) profiled using culture‐based and/or culture‐independent methods (including sequencing‐based approaches)

Structures and application of oligosaccharides in human milk

open access: yesProceedings of the Japan Academy, Series B, 2010
Comparative study of the oligosaccharide profiles of individual human milk revealed the presence of three different patterns. Four oligosaccharides containing the Fucalpha1-2Gal group were missing in the milk of non-secretor, and three oligosaccharides containing the Fucalpha1-4GlcNAc group were missing in the milk of Lewis negative individuals ...

Maternal Perinatal Gut Microbiome Is Shaped by Traditional Farming Lifestyle and Associated With Early Childhood Atopic Disease

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
We assessed whether the maternal perinatal gut microbiome and serum SCFA and cord blood SCFA differ between traditional farming and urban dyads. Women following a farming lifestyle had increased microbial diversity, several differentially abundant bacterial species and functional pathways, and increased circulating SCFA. Overall maternal gut microbiome

Maternal Prebiotic Supplementation Modifies Associations Between Intrapartum Antibiotics and Infant Allergy

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
This study examined whether antibiotic use altered the risk of infant allergic disease within a maternal prebiotics supplementation trial. Intrapartum antibiotics were maternal antibiotics administered during childbirth, from the onset of labour or induction until 1‐h before delivery.

Characteristics of Oligosaccharide Composition in Chinese Human Milk [PDF]

open access: yesShipin Kexue
To analyze the impact of different regions, lactation times, and blood group genotypes on the oligosaccharide composition of healthy lactating mothers’ breast milk from representative regions of China, and to explore the compositional characteristics of ...

Gut microbiota as a novel therapeutic target for eating disorders and obesity

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
The graphical abstract highlights the bidirectional interaction between the gut microbiota and central homeostatic and hedonic mechanisms regulating food intake, which contributes to overweight and obesity. It also illustrates emerging microbiota‐based biomarkers and therapeutic strategies (including prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics, synbiotics and ...

Saccharomyces cerevisiae Yeast‐Based Supplement and Breast Milk Supply: A Randomised Placebo‐Controlled Trial

open access: yesMaternal &Child Nutrition, EarlyView.
Maternal brewer's yeast supplementation did not change the milk oligosaccharide (HMO) concentration, but more mothers felt their milk supply was increased, and fewer reported formula use by 6 months postpartum compared to those taking the placebo. This suggests the supplement may support breastfeeding, warranting further investigation in larger trials.

Therapeutic Potential of Chickpea‐Derived Bioactives: A Review With Perspective of Different In Vitro, Animal, and Human Studies

open access: yesLegume Science, Volume 8, Issue 3, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is an important dietary legume worldwide and provides micronutrients and phytochemicals, including phenolics, flavonoids, carotenoids, bioactive peptides, dietary fiber, and resistant starch. This narrative review summarizes evidence from in vitro, animal, and human studies on the potential health relevance of ...
