Huperzine A suppresses absence seizures in the genetic absence epilepsy rat from Strasbourg (GAERS) model of genetic generalized epilepsy with absence seizures

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, Volume 9, Issue 5, Page 1826-1836, October 2024.
Abstract Objective We evaluated huperzine A treatment in the Genetic Absence Epilepsy Rat from Strasbourg (GAERS) model of genetic generalized epilepsy (GGE) with absence seizures. Methods Adult male GAERS (N = 15) were implanted with EEG recording electrodes 10 days before receiving study drug.

Insights into U‐to‐C RNA editing from the lycophyte Phylloglossum drummondii

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 119, Issue 1, Page 445-459, July 2024.
Significance Statement U‐to‐C RNA editing is only found in plants, and within plants, only in some hornworts, lycophytes and ferns. The unusual lycophyte Phylloglossum drummondii contains four U‐to‐C editing sites that can be matched with four putative U‐to‐C editing enzymes, making it a useful model for the study of this uncommon process.

Current state of the epilepsy drug and device pipeline

open access: yesEpilepsia, Volume 65, Issue 4, Page 833-845, April 2024.
Abstract The field of epilepsy has undergone substantial advances as we develop novel drugs and devices. Yet considerable challenges remain in developing broadly effective, well‐tolerated treatments, but also precision treatments for rare epilepsies and seizure‐monitoring devices.

Expression and functional analysis of the lysine decarboxylase and copper amine oxidase genes from the endophytic fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides ES026

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Huperzine A (HupA) isolated from Huperzia serrata is an important compound used to treat Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Recently, HupA was reported in various endophytic fungi, with Colletotrichum gloeosporioides ES026 previously isolated from H.

Screening and Characterization of Potential Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitors From Phyllanthus emblica L. Fruits Using Affinity Ultrafiltration Combined With Ultra‐High‐Performance Liquid Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry

open access: yesJournal of Food Biochemistry, Volume 2024, Issue 1, 2024.
In this study, targeting acetylcholinesterase (AChE) related to Alzheimer’s disease, a screening method, affinity ultrafiltration combined with ultra‐high‐performance liquid chromatography–quadrupole‐time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (AUF–UHPLC–Q‐TOF MS) was developed for the discovery and identification of AChE inhibitors from Phyllanthus emblica L ...

Isolation and characterization of endophytic huperzine A-producing fungi from Huperzia serrata

open access: yesJournal of Industrial Microbiology & Biotechnology, 2010
Huperzia serrata is a producer of huperzine A (HupA), a cholinesterase inhibitor (ChEI). Over 120 endophytic fungi were recovered from this plant and screened for Hup-A and nine were found. These nine represented seven different fungal genera with the most significant producer being Shiraia sp. A total of 127 endophytic fungi isolates obtained from the

Huperzine A: is it an effective disease-modifying drug for Alzheimer’s disease?

open access: yesFrontiers in Aging Neuroscience, 2014
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder for which there is no cure. Huperzine A (HupA) is a natural inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) derived from the Chinese folk medicine Huperzia serrata (Qian Ceng Ta).

A New Lycopodine Alkaloid from Huperzia Serrata

open access: yesJournal of Chemical Research, 2012
A new lycopodine alkaloid, 6 α, 11 α-dihydroxylycopodine, and three known compounds L20, lycoposerramine K, and huperzine A were isolated from the stems of Huperzia serrata. The structure of the new alkaloid was established by spectroscopic methods, especially two-dimensional NMR techniques.
