Evidence for the role of EPHX2 gene variants in anorexia nervosa. [PDF]
Anorexia nervosa (AN) and related eating disorders are complex, multifactorial neuropsychiatric conditions with likely rare and common genetic and environmental determinants.

Microsomal epoxide hydrolase is not a 2-arachidonyl glycerol hydrolase [PDF]
The endocannabinoid 2-arachidonyl glycerol (2-AG) is substantially hydrolysed by at least two enzymes, fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) and monoarachidonyl glycerol lipase (MAGL), which thereby terminate its biological activity. In a recent report it has been claimed that microsomal epoxide hydrolase (mEH), hitherto known as a xenobiotic detoxifying ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

IFN-Induced PARPs—Sensors of Foreign Nucleic Acids?
Cells have developed different strategies to cope with viral infections. Key to initiating a defense response against viruses is the ability to distinguish foreign molecules from their own. One central mechanism is the perception of foreign nucleic acids

Ethanol Induced Disordering of Pancreatic Acinar Cell Endoplasmic Reticulum: An ER Stress/Defective Unfolded Protein Response Model. [PDF]
Background & aimsHeavy alcohol drinking is associated with pancreatitis, whereas moderate intake lowers the risk. Mice fed ethanol long term show no pancreas damage unless adaptive/protective responses mediating proteostasis are disrupted. Pancreatic

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Preliminary evaluation of probiotic properties of Lactobacillus strains isolated from Sardinian dairy products [PDF]
Twenty-three Lactobacillus strains of dairy origin were evaluated for some functional properties relevant to their use as probiotics. A preliminary subtractive screening based on the abilities to inhibit the growth of microbial pathogens and hydrolyze ...

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...
