Clinical implications of hypermucoviscosity phenotype in Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates: association with invasive syndrome in patients with community‐acquired bacteraemia [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Internal Medicine, 2006
Abstract.Background.  Klebsiella pneumoniae, a Gram‐negative bacillus usually forming glistening mucoid colonies with viscid consistency on the culture plate, is a common pathogen causing various clinical infection patterns. However, little is known about the clinical implications of this mucoid character.Objective.

A Simple Scoring Algorithm That Predicts Abscesses in Adults with Community-Onset Klebsiella pneumoniae Bacteremia: Hypermucoviscosity Matters.

open access: yesInfection and drug resistance, 2020
Klebsiella pneumoniae is a pathogen commonly found in community-onset bacteremia. It causes an invasive syndrome that is frequently presented by metastatic infections and abscesses elsewhere and that is necessary for surgical or drainage intervention. To achieve a scoring algorithm to identify patients with community-onset K.

Molecular Markers and Antimicrobial Resistance Patterns of Extraintestinal Pathogenic Escherichia coli from Camel Calves Including Colistin-Resistant and Hypermucoviscuous Strains

open access: yesTropical Medicine and Infectious Disease
Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) strains are capable of causing various systemic infections in both humans and animals. In this study, we isolated and characterized 30 E. coli strains from the parenchymatic organs and brains of young (

Rapid Identification and Typing of Carbapenem‐Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae Using MALDI‐TOF MS and Machine Learning

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 18, Issue 6, June 2025.
Matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionisation time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry combined with machine learning algorithms, such as Genetic Algorithm, Supervised Neural Network and Quick Classifier, is used to screen for characteristic mass peaks associated with carbapenem‐resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP). The integration of MALDI‐TOF MS with machine

Leveraging collateral sensitivity to counteract the evolution of bacteriophage resistance in bacteria

open access: yesmLife, Volume 4, Issue 2, Page 143-154, April 2025.
Abstract The escalating antibiotic resistance crisis poses a major global health threat. Bacteriophage therapy offers a promising alternative for combating multidrug‐resistant infections. However, bacterial resistance to phages remains a significant hurdle. Innovative strategies are needed to overcome this challenge. In this study, we developed a phage

Prevalence and Virulence Profiles of Klebsiella pneumoniae Isolated From Different Animals

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 11, Issue 2, March 2025.
The higher prevalence of K. pneumoniae was observed in companion than in wild animals. The predominant animals were dogs, turtles and snakes. Some animal‐sourced isolates carried virulence factors and revealed phylogenetic relatedness with human pathogens, suggesting a zoonotic risk between these two populations.

Survey of Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteraemia in two South Australian hospitals and detection of hypermucoviscous phenotype and magA/rmpA genotypes in K. pneumoniae isolates

open access: yes, 2013
PurposeClinical patterns of Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteraemia vary geographically. An invasive syndrome involving abscess formation has emerged in recent years.

Incidence of hypermucoviscous Klebsiella pneumoniae and phenotypic detection of their virulence factors along with classical strains among patients visiting tertiary care hospital

open access: yesJournal of Infection in Developing Countries
Introduction: A new strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae named hypermucoviscous K. pneumoniae emerges with a distinctive feature to classical strains. Infections due to hypermucoviscous strains have increased with significant mortality and morbidity.
