Patient experiences of tuberculosis treatment deferral after a trace Xpert Ultra result: a prospective cohort study

open access: yesInfectious Diseases of Poverty
Background A “trace” result from the Xpert Ultra molecular tuberculosis test indicates Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA detection but may not always signify tuberculosis disease.

Exploring lipid diversity and minimalism to define membrane requirements for synthetic cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Designing the lipid membrane of synthetic cells is a complex task, in which its various roles (among them solute transport, membrane protein support, and self‐replication) should all be integrated. In this review, we report the latest top‐down and bottom‐up advances and discuss compatibility and complexity issues of current engineering approaches ...

Understanding collaborative care implementation in the Department of Veterans Affairs: core functions and implementation challenges

open access: yesBMC Health Services Research, 2017
Background The collaborative care model is an evidence-based practice for treatment of depression in which designated care managers provide clinical services, often by telephone.

Structural dynamics of the plant hormone receptor ETR1 in a native‐like membrane environment

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The present study unveils the structural and signaling dynamics of ETR1, a key plant ethylene receptor. Using an optimized nanodisc system and solution NMR, we captured full‐length ETR1 in a native‐like membrane environment. Our findings reveal dynamic domain uncoupling and Cu(I)‐induced rigidification, providing the first evidence of metal‐triggered ...

Translational and Implementation Research to Bridge Evidence and Implementation [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of Nutrition and Metabolism, 2019
Background: The role of science in guiding interventions and programs and contributing to progress in achieving global targets is undeniable. In public health nutrition, biological research in the past century focused largely on single nutrients and provided the basis for addressing nutritional deficiencies.

How is implementation research applied to advance health in low-income and middle-income countries?

open access: yesBMJ Global Health, 2019
This paper examines the characteristics of implementation research (IR) efforts in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) by describing how key IR principles and concepts have been used in published health research in LMICs between 1998 and 2016,

Mechanistic basis for inhibition of the extended‐spectrum β‐lactamase GES‐1 by enmetazobactam and tazobactam

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is of huge importance, resulting in over 1 million deaths each year. Here, we describe how a new drug, enmetazobactam, designed to help fight resistant bacterial diseases, inhibits a key enzyme (GES‐1) responsible for AMR. Our data show it is a more potent inhibitor than the related tazobactam, with high‐level computation

Imeglimin attenuates liver fibrosis by inhibiting vesicular ATP release from hepatic stellate cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Imeglimin, at clinically relevant concentrations, inhibits vesicular ATP accumulation and release from hepatic stellate cells, thereby attenuating purinergic signaling and reducing fibrogenic activation. This mechanism reveals a newly identified antifibrotic action of imeglimin beyond glycemic control.

Using an intersectionality lens to explore barriers and enablers to hepatitis C point-of-care testing: a qualitative study among people who inject drugs and service providers

open access: yesInternational Journal for Equity in Health
Background Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a significant global health burden, particularly among people who inject drugs. Rapid point-of-care HCV testing has emerged as a promising approach to improve HCV detection and linkage to care in harm ...
