Alterations in gut‐derived uremic toxins before the onset of azotemic chronic kidney disease in cats

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Internal Medicine
Background Although gut‐derived uremic toxins are increased in azotemic chronic kidney disease (CKD) in cats and implicated in disease progression, it remains unclear if augmented formation or retention of these toxins is associated with the development ...

Uremic toxicity of indoxyl sulfate.

open access: yesNagoya journal of medical science, 2010
Indoxyl sulfate, a uremic toxin, is accumulated in the serum of chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. A part of the dietary protein-derived tryptophan is metabolized into indole by tryptophanase in intestinal bacteria. Indole is absorbed into the blood from the intestine, and is metabolized to indoxyl sulfate in the liver.

The Choice of Anti-Inflammatory Influences the Elimination of Protein-Bound Uremic Toxins

open access: yesToxins
Pain is a frequent and disturbing symptom among hemodialysis patients. Protein-bound uremic toxins (PBUTs) are related to cardiovascular and overall mortality, and they are difficult to remove with current hemodialysis treatments.
