The role of ALOX15 in inflammation-related diseases

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology
Arachidonate 15-lipoxygenase (ALOX15) is a key member of the lipoxygenase family, catalyzing the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) to produce numerous biologically active lipid mediators.

Engineering peptides into antibodies—opportunities and strategies for therapeutic innovation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Peptides and antibodies occupy complementary therapeutic niches. Peptides recognize difficult targets in a compact format, while antibodies add specificity, long half‐life, and effector functions. This review examines strategies that merge both modalities—peptide grafting into loops, terminal and Fc fusions, and bioconjugation—highlighting how ...

Neutrophil efferocytosis in chronic inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases: mechanistic insights and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology
Efferocytosis—the phagocytic clearance of apoptotic cells—is central to tissue homeostasis and the active resolution of inflammation. Although its mechanistic basis and disease relevance have been studied in isolation, no review has comprehensively ...

Liver organoids: modelling complexity in homeostasis and disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Studying liver in vitro has been challenging because simple 2D cell cultures fail to capture liver's cellular and architectural complexity. To bridge this gap, scientists increasingly use organoids, 3D liver models which better mimic liver composition and function. This review examines recent advances in liver organoid complexity and realism, discusses

The microbiome in human skin aging

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐related skin changes encompass the well‐known visible phenotypic alterations, together with microbiome dysbiosis and a series of molecular aging hallmarks. These hallmarks characterize not only a fully stablished aged phenotype but also the skin aging process itself.

Resolution of inflammation and mood disorders

open access: yesExperimental and Molecular Pathology, 2018
Relationship between mood disorders and inflammation is now well-documented, although molecular mechanisms are not understood. Previously mostly pro-inflammatory cytokines of immune system (IL-6, TNF, etc.) were taken into account. However, recent understanding of resolution of inflammation as an active process drew attention to mediators of resolution,

Autophagy and mitophagy in pancreatic β‐cell homeostasis and their involvement in diabetes pathophysiology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review focuses on the role of autophagy and mitophagy in maintaining pancreatic β‐cell function and homeostasis. We discuss how genetic defects affecting these pathways contribute to the development of type 1, type 2, monogenic, and gestational diabetes. We further explore their potential as therapeutic targets. Created in BioRender.

Fatty acid metabolism and lipid channeling in macrophages: mechanisms of inflammation, resolution, and lipotoxicity

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology
Macrophages integrate metabolic signals with immune activation, and their ability to handle fatty acids is central to preventing lipotoxicity and to sustaining effector functions.

Partial depletion of plasminogen activator inhibitor‐1 decreases subcutaneous fat cell hypertrophy and liver cholesterol in high‐fat‐fed female mice

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Obesity raises blood levels of PAI‐1, a protein linked to metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatotic liver disease in people with obesity. In female mice fed a high‐fat diet, partially lowering PAI‐1 led to smaller subcutaneous fat cells and lower liver cholesterol, without changing body weight or insulin sensitivity.
