Induction of interferons and interferon-induced genes

Biotherapy, 1996
Type I IFNs (IFN-α, IFN-β, and IFN-ω) are produced in most cell types upon virus infection and upon stimulation by dsRNA (with exceptions of embryonal carcinoma cells which are defective in expressing IFN genes). In addition, certain growth factors and lymphokines such as IL-1, colony stimulating factor (CSF), and TNF also induce type I IFNs.

Macrophage Activation by Interferon or Interferon Inducers

1980
There are at least three types of mechanism which singly or in combination may underlie macrophage activation by an administered agent: 1) the agent may directly affect macrophages or macrophage precursors; 2) the agent may trigger the complement, clotting, or plasminogen cascades to generate effector molecules which in turn affect the function of ...

Interferon-induced pulmonary sarcoidosis

Int. Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, 2005
A further new case of sarcoidosis associated with the use of interferon (IFN) in the classical treatment of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) is reported. During the last two years, more than 20 cases of interferon-induced sarcoidosis have been described in the literature and about half of these cases have involved CHC.

Interferon and Interferon Inducers: The Clinical Outlook

Hospital Practice, 1969
To what extent is interferon fulfilling its promise as a “broad-spectrum” antiviral agent? Current research suggests that stimulation of host interferon by inducers, rather than direct administration, will be the method by which interferon's properties are exploited.
