Interneuron Diversity series: Inhibitory interneurons and network oscillations in vitro
Trends in Neurosciences, 2003In vitro models of rhythms of cognitive relevance, such as gamma (30-80 Hz) and theta (5-12 Hz) rhythms in the hippocampus, demonstrate an absolute requirement for phasic inhibitory synaptic transmission. Such rhythms can occur transiently, of approximately 1 s duration, or persistently, lasting for many hours.

Interneurons are often classified according to neuropeptide content. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that neuropeptides are more than convenient neurochemical markers and can act as important modulators of neuronal activity. Recent advances in understanding neuropeptide release and physiological actions suggest that the interneuronal system ...

Layer-specific interneuron activity
Science, 2017Brain Microcircuits Somatostatin-expressing interneurons are an important group of inhibitory neurons in the brain that target and thus control the dendrites of pyramidal cells. These interneurons have recently been shown to play a role in sensorimotor integration, reinforcement encoding ...

Specificity of interneuronal connections
Annals of Anatomy - Anatomischer Anzeiger, 1992A fundamental problem of neurobiological research is how specific connections between individual neurons are established and maintained. In this report different levels of neuronal specificity are described. Some neuronal populations display region specificity, but within the target region they establish synapses with a variety of neurons.

Synchronization of Neocortical Interneurons
2003As shown by recent experiments, the Fast-Spiking inhibitory interneurons of the neocortex interact also by electrical synapses (gap-junctions). Moreover, their synchronous discharge enhances their inhibitory control of pyramidal neurons. By using a biophysical model of these interneurons the synchronization properties of a network of two synaptically ...
