Mapping of the habenulo-interpeduncular pathway in living mice using manganese-enhanced 3D MRI

open access: yes, 2006
This magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study describes mapping of the habenulo-interpeduncular pathway in living mice based on manganese-induced contrast.

Landmarks for the Location of the Subthalamic Nucleus Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging

open access: yesBrazilian Neurosurgery, 2017
Deep brain stimulation has become an option for advanced Parkinson's disease treatment since the 1990s, but the first reports are from Benabid's team, a French neurosurgeon, in the 1980s.

Genetically defined nucleus incertus neurons differ in connectivity and function

open access: yeseLife
The nucleus incertus (NI), a conserved hindbrain structure implicated in the stress response, arousal, and memory, is a major site for production of the neuropeptide relaxin-3.

Brain‐Wide Patterns of CRF Receptor 1 Expression in the Transgenic CRFR1‐Cre‐2a‐tdTom Rat

open access: yesJournal of Comparative Neurology, Volume 533, Issue 11, November 2025.
In this article, we provide an extensive neuroanatomical characterization of a recently generated CRFR1‐Cre‐2A‐tdTomato rat. We show that Cre and tdTomato are expressed in a pattern that closely aligns with previously reported CRFR1 expression patterns.

Increased CRF signalling in a ventral tegmental area-interpeduncular nucleus-medial habenula circuit induces anxiety during nicotine withdrawal

open access: yes, 2016
This article has been corrected. See Nat Commun. 2015 July 02; 6: 7625.Increased anxiety is a prominent withdrawal symptom in abstinent smokers, yet the neuroanatomical and molecular bases underlying it are unclear.

Image_1_Medial Habenula-Interpeduncular Nucleus Circuit Contributes to Anhedonia-Like Behavior in a Rat Model of Depression.TIF

open access: yes, 2018
The habenula is a nuclear complex composed of the lateral habenula (LHb) and medial habenula (MHb), two distinct structures. Much progress has been made to emphasize the role of the LHb in the pathogenesis of depression.

Effect of anticholinergic eye drops on intraorbital, periorbital and brain pulsation power

open access: yesActa Ophthalmologica, Volume 103, Issue 7, Page e511-e523, November 2025.
Abstract Purpose The study aims to investigate the effect of pharmacologically reducing parasympathetic activity on ocular and cerebral pulsations, inspired by recent discoveries of a glymphatic‐like system in the eye driven by physiological pulsations.

A cell-type-specific circuit of somatostatin neurons in the habenula encodes antidepressant action in male mice

open access: yesNature Communications
Major depression is characterized by an array of negative experiences, including hopelessness and anhedonia. We hypothesize that inhibition of negative experiences or aversion may generate antidepressant action.

Overexpression of Spexin 1 in the Dorsal Habenula Reduces Anxiety in Zebrafish

open access: yesFrontiers in Neural Circuits, 2019
Spexin (SPX) is an evolutionarily conserved neuropeptide that is expressed in the mammalian brain and peripheral tissue. Two orthologs are present in the teleost, SPX1 and SPX2. SPX1 is involved in reproduction and food intake.

Fetal Medial Habenula Transplants: Innervation of the Rat Interpeduncular Nucleus [PDF]

open access: yesNeural Plasticity, 1989
The effects of donor age and site of placement on the survival of fetal medial habenula (MH) transplants into adult rats hosts were examined. The innervation of the interpeduncular nucleus (IPN) in such cases was also examined. Explants of MH consisting of the medial‐dorsal lip of the third ventricle were held in vitro for 1—2 days.
