Spatial Investigation of Facet Joint Cartilage Properties Reveals Specific Structure–Function Relationships

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 9, Issue 3, September 2026.
The inferior facet of the L2 vertebra and the superior facet of the L3 vertebra were harvested from ovine lumbar spines. The spatial biomechanical properties of the facet cartilage surfaces were determined by indentation mapping. Cartilage structure was spatially analyzed on a macroscopic and microscopic level.

Human In Vivo Disc Mechanics in Flexion, Extension, and Diurnal Loading With Aging and Degeneration

open access: yesJOR SPINE, Volume 9, Issue 3, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Background The intervertebral disc serves a critical role in spine function, but with aging and degeneration the disc undergoes changes that alter disc mechanics, and degeneration is often implicated in low back pain. The objective of this study was to quantify and evaluate the impact of aging and degeneration on in vivo lumbar disc mechanics ...

A Piezo‐Mimetic Ionic Hydrogel Harnessing Joint Motion for Cartilage Repair

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 43, 3 August 2026.
A piezo‐mimetic ionic hydrogel converts mechanical deformation into bioactive ionic currents via stress‐induced asymmetric ion migration. Coupled with sustained Mg2+ release, this mechano‐electrochemical platform bridges mechanical loading and cellular signaling, enabling load‐adaptive stimulation and enhanced cartilage regeneration. ABSTRACT Articular

Numerical and Experimental Assessment of Oxygen Distribution in a Perfusion Bioreactor to Mimic the Osteochondral Niche

open access: yesBiotechnology and Bioengineering, Volume 123, Issue 8, Page 2139-2152, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Oxygen supply is a critical parameter in 3D cell cultivation using bioreactors. Since bioreactor designs often prioritise practical constraints, understanding the oxygen supply dynamics of the media is crucial for achieving either uniform or spatially controlled oxygen delivery.
