Constitutive nitric oxide synthase (cNOS) activity in Langerhans islets from streptozotocin diabetic rats

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, 1998
Nitric oxide synthase activity was measured in Langerhans islets isolated from control and streptozotocin diabetic rats. The activity of the enzyme was linear up to 150 µg of protein from control rats and was optimal at 0.1 µM calcium, when it was ...

Pancreatic islet (of Langerhans) revisited.

open access: yesHistology and histopathology, 2019
One hundred and fifty years ago, Paul Langerhans described what would come to be known as pancreatic 'islet of Langerhans'. Since then, we have accumulated knowledge about the pancreatic islet, the cells that exist there and the hormones secreted by these cells.

Excitation wave propagation as a possible mechanism for signal transmission in pancreatic islets of Langerhans

open access: yes, 2001
In response to glucose application, β-cells forming pancreatic islets of Langerhans start bursting oscillations of the membrane potential and intracellular calcium concentration, inducing insulin secretion by the cells.

Antidiabetic effects of fennel leaf aqueous extract in alloxan-induced diabetic rats

open access: yesJournal of Pharmaceutical Health Care and Sciences
Background Diabetes Mellitus is a common chronic metabolic disease in the world population. There is evidences on the anti-hyperglycemic effects of different parts of fennel; however, the reports about antidiabetic activity of fennel leaves are not ...

Metabolism of Glucose in the Islets of Langerhans

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 1968
Abstract The levels of glycogen, glucose, glucose-6-P, the sum of fructose diphosphate plus dihydroxyacetone-P, ATP, and the pyridine nucleotides were measured in endocrine and exocrine tissue of the pancreas of obese hyperglycemic mice. Sorbitol was determined in both types of tissue after a single intravenous injection of the compound.

Prediction of Pancreatic Islet Yield After Pancreatectomy Using Optical Coherence Elastography

open access: yesDiagnostics
Intraoperative assessment of pancreatic quality, followed by sampling for the potential isolation of Langerhans islets for subsequent autotransplantation, is currently a key component of post-total pancreatectomy diabetes mellitus treatment.

Functional abnormalities of islets of Langerhans of obese hyperglycemic mouse.

open access: yes, 1977
Glucose-induced insulin release was studied in vitro with isolated islets of Langerhans obtained from obese hyperglycemic C57Bl/6J-ob/ob (ob/ob) and lean C57Bl/6J-+/+ (control) mice.

Adventures with Insulin in the Islets of Langerhans [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Biological Chemistry, 2011
Insulin is a small but beautifully organized protein with a unique two-chain structure, the first protein to be sequenced. The mechanism of its biosynthesis invited much initial speculation but was finally clarified by the discovery of proinsulin, its single-chain precursor.

Immobilization of Sertoli cells on islets of Langerhans

open access: yes, 2013
Sertoli cells play a crucial role in creating the immunoprivileged environment of the testis. We examined the survival of islets of Langerhans after co-transplantation with Sertoli cells. Sertoli cells near islets should protect the graft from rejection.
