The Changing Epidemiology of Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacterales
Objective Israeli hospitals were confronted with a major national outbreak of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) starting in 2006, caused predominantly by monoclonal Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae ...

This study reports on the characterization of a Klebsiella pneumoniae clinical isolate showing high-level resistance to ceftazidime-avibactam associated with the production of KPC-53, a KPC-3 variant exhibiting a Leu167Glu168 duplication in the Ω-loop and a loss of carbapenemase activity.

Molecules in the inner few kpc of the galaxy [PDF]
Emission and absorption spectra of several molecules have been used to trace the kinematic patterns of molecular material in the inner Galaxy. For a variety of reasons, the great majority of effort in this area has focussed on the region 357 ≳ ℓ ≳ 3° very near the plane b = 0°.

Background: Lower respiratory tract infections are one of the most common infections among the patients in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). Admission in ICUs and use of life supporting devices increase the risk of infection with multidrug resistant pathogens.

Discovery of a 2 Kpc binary quasar [PDF]
LBQS 0103$-$2753 is a binary quasar with a separation of only 0.3 arcsec. The projected spacing of 2.3 kpc at the distance of the source (z = 0.848) is much smaller than that of any other known binary QSO. The binary nature is demonstrated by the very different spectra of the two components and the low probability of a chance pairing.

Unravelling ceftazidime/avibactam resistance of KPC-28, a KPC-2 variant lacking carbapenemase activity [PDF]
AbstractBackgroundKPC-like carbapenemases have spread worldwide with more than 30 variants identified that differ by single or double amino-acid substitutions.ObjectivesTo describe the steady-state kinetic parameters of KPC-28, which differs from KPC-2 by a H274Y substitution and the deletion of two amino acids (Δ242-GT-243).MethodsThe blaKPC-2, blaKPC-

Fueling Processes on (Sub-)kpc Scales
Since the 1970s, astronomers have struggled with the issue of how matter can be accreted to promote black-hole growth. While low-angular-momentum stars may be devoured by a black hole, they are not a sustainable source of fuel. Gas, which could potentially provide an abundant fuel source, presents another challenge due to its enormous angular momentum.

Spread of KPC-producing carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae: the importance of super-spreaders and rectal KPC concentration [PDF]
Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae is a pathogen causing an epidemic of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) in healthcare settings in developed countries. The spread is primarily by patient-to-patient transmission. Understanding the mode of spread is important for designing effective control measures. We
