Metabolic reprogramming of Salmonella infected macrophages and its modulation by iron availability and the mTOR pathway

open access: yesMicrobial Cell, 2019
Iron is an essential nutrient for immune cells and microbes, therefore the control of its homeostasis plays a decisive role for infections. Moreover, iron affects metabolic pathways by modulating the translational expression of the key tricarboxylic acid

Nuclear spin physics in quantum dots: an optical investigation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The mesoscopic spin system formed by the 10E4-10E6 nuclear spins in a semiconductor quantum dot offers a unique setting for the study of many-body spin physics in the condensed matter.

Mechanistic Information and Causal Continuity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Some biological processes (our examples are DNA expression and a reflex response in the leech) move from step to step in a way that cannot be completely understood solely in terms of causes and correlations.

Potential therapeutic targeting of BKCa channels in glioblastoma treatment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review summarizes current insights into the role of BKCa and mitoBKCa channels in glioblastoma biology, their potential classification as oncochannels, and the emerging pharmacological strategies targeting these channels, emphasizing the translational challenges in developing BKCa‐directed therapies for glioblastoma treatment.

Eradication of Krebs-2 primary ascites via a single-injection regimen of cyclophosphamide and double-stranded DNA

open access: yesВавиловский журнал генетики и селекции, 2016
Previously, we reported on the development of a therapeutic regimen allowing eradication of primary murine Krebs-2 ascites transplants. This protocol involved multiple injections of dsDNA preparations administered during the NER and HR phases of repair ...

PARP inhibition and pharmacological ascorbate demonstrate synergy in castration‐resistant prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pharmacologic ascorbate (vitamin C) increases ROS, disrupts cellular metabolism, and induces DNA damage in CRPC cells. These effects sensitize tumors to PARP inhibition, producing synergistic growth suppression with olaparib in vitro and significantly delayed tumor progression in vivo. Pyruvate rescue confirms ROS‐dependent activity.

Mouse Idh3a mutations cause retinal degeneration and reduced mitochondrial function

open access: yesDisease Models & Mechanisms, 2018
Isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) is an enzyme required for the production of α-ketoglutarate from isocitrate. IDH3 generates the NADH used in the mitochondria for ATP production, and is a tetramer made up of two α, one β and one γ subunit. Loss-of-function

A novel alveolar Krebs cycle-triggered CO2 sensing mechanism regulates regional pulmonary ventilation. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Pulmonary perfusion disorders provoke atelectasis in order to minimize ventilation/perfusion mismatch. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unknown.
