Bifidobacteria compensate for genotype in lactose tolerance

The lactase-persistence (LP) genotype allows digestion of the milk sugar lactose in adults and confers lactose tolerance. Genetically lactase non-persistent (LNP) individuals can also be lactose tolerant, but responsible microbiota remain elusive.
