Neutrophils Reduce the Parasite Burden in Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis-Infected Macrophages

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2010
Studies on the role of neutrophils in Leishmania infection were mainly performed with L. (L) major, whereas less information is available for L. (L) amazonensis. Previous results from our laboratory showed a large infiltrate of neutrophils in the site of infection in a mouse strain resistant to L. (L.) amazonensis (C3H/HePas).

Effects of Brazilian propolis on Leishmania amazonensis [PDF]

open access: yesMemórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 2007
Leishmaniasis, an endemic parasitosis that leads to chronic cutaneous, mucocutaneous or visceral lesions, is part of those diseases, which still requires improved control tools. Propolis has shown activities against different bacteria, fungi, and parasites.

Alterations induced in the ileum of mice upon inoculation with different species of Leishmania: a preliminary study

open access: yesRevista da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical
INTRODUCTION: Leishmania species cause skin, mucosal, and disseminated lesions. We studied the effects of three Leishmania species on ileal morphology in mice.

Health Benefits and Therapeutic Potential of Quercetin

open access: yesJournal of Food Biochemistry, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Quercetin, a polyphenolic compound prevalent in many fruits, vegetables, and other dietary sources, has attracted considerable interest due to its extensive health benefits. This review examines its diverse biological properties, particularly its antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory effects. The study integrates recent scientific findings to elucidate the

Cell-to-cell transfer of Leishmania amazonensis amastigotes is mediated by immunomodulatory LAMP-rich parasitophorous extrusions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The last step of Leishmania intracellular life cycle is the egress of amastigotes from the host cell and their uptake by adjacent cells. Using multidimensional live imaging of long-term-infected macrophage cultures we observed that Leishmania amazonensis

In vitro additive interaction between ketoconazole and antimony against intramacrophage Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis amastigotes

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Leishmaniasis is a group of diseases caused by protozoa of Leishmania genus. The currently available treatments for this disease are expensive, present high toxicity and are associated to difficulties of healing and parasite resistance.

Piplartine as an Innovative Natural Product With Dual Antiparasitic and Immunomodulatory Actions

open access: yesJournal of Immunology Research, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) remain a major global health burden, disproportionately affecting low‐ and middle‐income regions and demanding innovative therapeutic strategies. This review summarizes current evidence on piplartine (piperlongumine), a naturally occurring amide from Piper species with broad antiparasitic and immunomodulatory ...

Comparative two-dimensional gel electrophoresis maps for promastigotes of Leishmania amazonensis and Leishmania major

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases
The outcome of Leishmania infections is determined by both the parasite species and the host genetic makeup. While much has been learned regarding immune responses to this parasite, our knowledge on parasite-derived factors is limited.
