Mast cells: from lipid droplets to lipid mediators [PDF]
LDs (lipid droplets) are metabolically highly active intracellular organelles. The lipid and protein profiles of LDs are cell-type-specific, and they undergo dynamic variation upon changes in the physiological state of a cell. It is well known that the main function of the LDs in adipocytes is to ensure energy supply and to maintain lipid homoeostasis ...

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.

Manipulation of lipid rafts in neuronal cells [PDF]
Lipid rafts are specialized plasma membrane micro-domains highly enriched in cholesterol, sphingolipids and glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchored proteins.

Ecological optimization of biomass and lipid production by microalgae [PDF]
Microalgae have higher growth rates and higher lipid content than terrestrial plants and the yield per unit area is even higher by several orders of magnitude.

A twist of FATe: Lipid droplets and inflammatory lipid mediators
Lipid droplets are fat storage organelles present in most eukaryotic cells. They consist of a neutral lipid core containing mostly triglycerides and sterol esters and covered by a monolayer of phospholipids, wherein numerous proteins are embedded. In the cell, lipid droplets have a dynamic life cycle, rapidly altering their size, location, lipid and ...

Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Lipid signaling in CD95‐mediated apoptosis [PDF]
Ceramides play an important role mediating different cell responses such as proliferation, differentiation, growth arrest and apoptosis. They are released upon sphingomyelin hydrolysis which occurs after triggering of a number of cell surface receptors including CD95. Ceramide generation also regulates glycosphingolipid and ganglioside metabolism.

Biophysical approaches for studying viral entry
Viruses infect all living organisms and have been responsible for major epidemics and pandemics. Their ongoing evolutionary battle with host defenses creates a constant need for improved tools to study viral behavior. Advancing methods to probe viral attachment, fusion, and genome release deepen our understanding of how infections begin and support the
