Edible Insect Allergens: An Emerging Food Safety Challenge

open access: yesSustainable Food Proteins, Volume 4, Issue 3, September 2026.
Allergic responses to edible insects arise via two main pathways: cross‐reactivity with homologous arthropod allergens and primary sensitization to edible insect proteins, both leading to IgE‐mediated immune activation. ABSTRACT Edible insects are increasingly promoted as sustainable protein sources; however, their allergenic potential remains a ...

A phylogenetic analysis of the lipocalin protein family

open access: yes, 2000
The lipocalins are a family of extracellular proteins that bind and transport small hydrophobic molecules. They are found in eubacteria and a great variety of eukaryotic cells, in which they play diverse physiological roles.

Human Blood‐Brain Tumor Barrier on a Chip to Investigate Personalized Treatment for Glioblastoma Patients

open access: yesSmall, Volume 22, Issue 49, 1 September 2026.
A microfluidic model of the glioblastoma (GBM) margin was developed to mimic patient‐specific blood‐brain tumor barrier (BBTB) function and drug response. The platform revealed inter‐patient variability in barrier integrity and drug sensitivity, offering a tool for personalized therapy evaluation in GBM.

The Impacts of Lipocalin in Cancer

open access: yes
Cholangiocarcinoma, CCA, is a cancer of the intrahepatic and the extrahepatic biliary epitheiun. It is often aggressive, clinically silent, and has a poor patient outcome, with a 10% 5-year survival rate across all SEER stages combined.

Urotensin II Receptor Deletion Mitigates Kidney Injury and Renal Lipid Remodeling in Mice Fed a Long‐Term High‐Fat Diet

open access: yesFASEB BioAdvances, Volume 8, Issue 9, September 2026.
Urotensin II receptor deletion mitigates high‐fat diet‐induced kidney injury and renal lipid remodeling. Male wild‐type (WT) and urotensin II receptor–knockout (UT KO) mice were fed a high‐fat diet (HFD; 60% kcal from fat) for 33 weeks. In cultured mouse podocytes, urotensin II (UII)–UT signaling enhanced transient receptor potential canonical 6 (TRPC6)

Conditional eIF2A Deletion Suggests Extra‐Adipose Mechanisms Underlying Metabolic Syndrome in Total‐Body eIF2A Knockout Mice

open access: yesFASEB BioAdvances, Volume 8, Issue 9, September 2026.
Adipose tissue‐specific deficiency of eIF2A is insufficient to reproduce the metabolic defects observed in total‐body eIF2A knockout mice, suggesting that the systemic metabolic effects observed in these mice may arise from coordinated functions across multiple organs.

Diverse DTPA‐chelated lanthanides with relevance for nuclear medicine bound to an engineered lipocalin reveal conserved ligand geometry

open access: yesActa Crystallographica Section F, Volume 82, Issue 9, Page 301-311, September 2026.
Structural and binding studies of the engineered lipocalin CL31d towards the chelate complexes of 11 different lanthanide and main‐group metal(III) ions, whose radioisotopes are useful for nuclear medicine, with a functionalized DTPA revealed a surprisingly broad tolerance towards varying ionic radii, thus enabling flexible radionuclide‐targeting ...

Effects of Acute Low‐ and Moderate‐Dose Alcohol on Chronic Disease‐Related Biomarkers in Healthy Light and Heavy Drinkers

open access: yesAlcohol, Clinical and Experimental Research, Volume 50, Issue 9, September 2026.
This randomized, placebo‐controlled trial compared the effects of low‐ and moderate‐dose alcohol on biomarkers related to chronic disease in light and heavy drinkers. We identified novel acute alcohol effects as well as between‐group differences suggestive of pathophysiological processes by which alcohol use may promote chronic disease.
