The Thermodynamics of General and Local Anesthesia [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 2014
General anesthetics are known to cause depression of the freezing point of transitions in biomembranes. This is a consequence of ideal mixing of the anesthetic drugs in the membrane fluid phase and exclusion from the solid phase. Such a generic law provides physical justification of the famous Meyer-Overton rule.

Genetic liability for diet-derived circulating antioxidants, oxidative stress, and risk of osteoarthritis: a Mendelian randomization study

open access: yesFrontiers in Nutrition, 2023
BackgroundAlthough well-documented, the causal relationships between diet-derived circulating antioxidants, oxidative stress, and osteoarthritis (OA) are equivocal.

The feasibility of local anesthesia for the surgical treatment of umbilical hernia: a systematic review of the literature [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Background: Yearly approximately 4500 umbilical hernias are repaired in The Netherlands, mostly under general anesthesia. The use of local anesthesia has shown several advantages in groin hernia surgery.

Advances in the Understanding of Two-Pore Domain TASK Potassium Channels and Their Potential as Therapeutic Targets

open access: yesMolecules, 2022
TWIK-related acid-sensitive K+ (TASK) channels, including TASK-1, TASK-3, and TASK-5, are important members of the two-pore domain potassium (K2P) channel family. TASK-5 is not functionally expressed in the recombinant system.

Dissolving Microneedles for Rapid and Painless Local Anesthesia

open access: yesPharmaceutics, 2020
Microneedles are emerging drug delivery methods for painless treatment. The current study tested dissolving microneedles containing lidocaine (Li-DMN) for use in local anesthesia.

Light-triggered release of conventional local anesthetics from a macromolecular prodrug for on-demand local anesthesia

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
An on-demand anesthetic that would only take effect when needed and where the intensity of anesthesia could be easily adjustable according to patients’ needs would be highly desirable.
