An Intact Dopamine Sensitivity in the Brain: A Necessity to Recover Hyperprolactinemia and Galactorrhea in a Female Hemodialysis Patient?

open access: yesCase Reports in Nephrology, Volume 2017, Issue 1, 2017., 2017
A female hemodialysis patient with galactorrhea due to hyperprolactinemia was treated with different dialysis modalities to assess the effect on prolactin levels. A single session of both high‐flux hemodialysis and hemodiafiltration resulted in decreased prolactin levels (16,6% and 77,2%, resp.).

In Hyperprolactinemia, Testing for Macroprolactin Is Essential [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Chemistry, 2003
Autonomous secretion of prolactin (PRL) by a pituitary prolactinoma is a relatively common endocrine disorder characterized by increased serum concentrations of PRL and symptoms of menstrual irregularity, infertility, and galactorrhea in women and impotence and lack of libido in men (1).

Oncogenic driver and therapeutic target: Prolactin signalling axis in retroperitoneal sarcoma

open access: yesClinical and Translational Medicine, Volume 16, Issue 5, May 2026.
Retroperitoneal sarcoma cells can secrete prolactin into the bloodstream, inducing hyperprolactinaemia, which subsequently triggers metabolic reprogramming, such as glucose metabolism. SOX4 can function as a transcription factor that facilitates PRL transcription.

Galactocele in a Male Infant with Transient Hyperprolactinaemia: An Extremely Rare Cause of Breast Enlargement in Children

open access: yesCase Reports in Pediatrics, Volume 2016, Issue 1, 2016., 2016
Galactocele is a rare breast condition in infants. Here, we report a 16‐month‐old boy who developed progressive left breast enlargement. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 4 cm cystic lesion at left breast. Hormonal assay showed transient hyperprolactinaemia with no known cause identified.

The Effects of Bromocriptine on Preventing Postpartum Flare in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Patients from South China

open access: yesJournal of Immunology Research, Volume 2015, Issue 1, 2015., 2015
Objective. Prolactin plays an important role on the disease flare of postpartum SLE patients. 76 pregnant SLE patients were enrolled in this study to evaluate the efficacy of bromocriptine (an inhibitor of prolactin secretion) on preventing the postpartum disease relapse. Methods.

Detection of macroprolactinemia and molecular characterization of prolactin isoforms in blood samples of hyperprolactinemic women [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Medical Biochemistry, 2012
Prolactin (PRL) circulates in the blood in the form of monomeric prolactin, dimeric prolactin and macroprolactin. Macroprolactin is a common cause of hyperprolactinemia.

Macroprolactinemia in patients with hyperprolactinemia: an experience from a single tertiary center

open access: yesThe Pan African Medical Journal, 2020
Macroprolactinemia frequently causes misdiagnosis, unnecessary investigation and inappropriate treatment in hyperprolactinemic patients. Aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence and clinical characteristics of Thai patients with ...

The Impact of Metformin on Plasma Prolactin Levels in Antipsychotics‐Treated Men With Hyperprolactinemia and Early‐Onset Androgenic Alopecia

open access: yesClinical Endocrinology, Volume 103, Issue 4, Page 513-522, October 2025.
ABSTRACT Objective Metformin decreases elevated levels of pituitary hormones. Little is known about the association between the reproductive axis and hormonal effects of this drug. The purpose of our study was to investigate whether activity of the hypothalamic‐pituitary‐gonadal axis determines metformin action on prolactin levels in men with prolactin

Successful Management of a Giant Pituitary Lactosomatotroph Adenoma Only with Cabergoline

open access: yesCase Reports in Endocrinology, Volume 2013, Issue 1, 2013., 2013
Although advances in endocrinologic and neuroradiologic research allow easier recognition of pituitary adenomas, giant pituitary tumours are relatively rare. In the literature, the term “giant” is generally used when a pituitary tumour becomes larger than 4 cm in diameter.

Thermal degradation of polyethylene glycol 6000 and its effect on the assay of macroprolactin

open access: yes, 2010
Study of the effectiveness of partially degraded polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG) as a precipitant for macroprolactin. PEG was heated to 63 °C in air for up to 20 days and its effectiveness assessed as a precipitant for sera containing normal prolactin or ...
