The Mycetoma Knowledge Gap: Identification of Research Priorities [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Mycetoma is a tropical disease which is caused by a taxonomically diverse range of actinomycetes (actinomycetoma) and fungi (eumycetoma). The disease was only recently listed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a neglected tropical disease (NTD ...

Madurella mycetoma: a neglected tropical disease [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Microbiology and Infection, 2022
Abstract Eumycotic mycetoma or eumycetoma is a chronic cutaneous and subcutaneous granulomatous infection caused by various fungi. A 65 year old gentleman presented with a history of nodular swellings on the right foot with discharging sinuses of six years duration. Radiological features showed signs of osteomyelitis. Histopathological examination of

The impact of AlphaFold Protein Structure Database on the fields of life sciences

open access: yesPROTEOMICS, Volume 23, Issue 17, September 2023., 2023
Abstract Arguably, 2020 was the year of high‐accuracy protein structure predictions, with AlphaFold 2.0 achieving previously unseen accuracy in the Critical Assessment of Protein Structure Prediction (CASP). In 2021, DeepMind and EMBL‐EBI developed the AlphaFold Protein Structure Database to make an unprecedented number of reliable protein structure ...

Evaluation of the Antiparasitic and Antifungal Activities of Synthetic Piperlongumine‐Type Cinnamide Derivatives: Booster Effect by Halogen Substituents

open access: yesChemMedChem, Volume 18, Issue 12, June 15, 2023., 2023
Halo‐ed ground: New piperlongumine‐type cinnamides with halogen substituents and the potential to bind tubulin show considerable activities against Toxoplasma gondii and Leishmania major protozoal parasites, and moderate activity against Trypanosoma brucei and Madurella mycetomatis, depending on the halogen atom present.

Using a Madurella mycetomatis‐specific PCR on grains obtained via non‐invasive fine‐needle aspirated material is more accurate than cytology

open access: yesMycoses, Volume 66, Issue 6, Page 477-482, June 2023., 2023
Abstract Background Eumycetoma is a chronic subcutaneous inflammatory fungal infection most often caused by the fungus Madurella mycetomatis. Using a species‐specific PCR on DNA directly isolated from grains is currently the most reliable method for species identification.

Comparing the performance of the common used eumycetoma diagnostic tests

open access: yesMycoses, Volume 66, Issue 5, Page 420-429, May 2023., 2023
Abstract Objectives Mycetoma is a neglected tropical implantation disease caused by 70 different infectious agents. Identifying the causative organism to the species level is essential for appropriate patient management. Ultrasound, histopathology, culture and two species‐specific PCRs are most the commonly used methods for species identification in ...
