An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Newton's method and regularly smooth operators

open access: yesJournal of Numerical Analysis and Approximation Theory, 2011
A semilocal convergence analysis for Newton's method in a Banach space setting is provided in this study. Using a combination of regularly smooth and center regularly smooth conditions on the operator involved, we obtain more precise majorizing sequences

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

High-throughput sequencing of the synaptome in major depressive disorder [PDF]

open access: yesMolecular Psychiatry, 2015
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is among the leading causes of worldwide disability. Despite its significant heritability, large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of MDD have yet to identify robustly associated common variants. Although increased sample sizes are being amassed for the next wave of GWAS, few studies have as yet focused on ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Weak convergence for the row sums of a triangular array of empirical processes under bracketing conditions

open access: yes, 1998
We study the weak convergence for the row sums of a triangular array of empirical processes under bracketing conditions involving majorizing measures. As an application, we consider the weak convergence of stochastic processes of the form an−1∑j=1nf(Xj,t)

Semilocal convergence conditions for the secant method, using recurrent functions

open access: yesJournal of Numerical Analysis and Approximation Theory, 2011
Using our new concept of recurrent functions, we present new sufficient convergence conditions for the secant method to a locally unique solution of a nonlinear equation in a Banach space.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

A Parallel Successive Convex Approximation Framework with Smoothing Majorization for Phase Retrieval [PDF]

open access: yes
This dissertation is concerned with the design and analysis of approximation-based methods for nonconvex nonsmooth optimization problems. The main idea behind those methods is to solve a difficult optimization problem by converting it into a sequence of ...

On Newton's method using recurrent functions under hypotheses up to the second Fréchet derivative

open access: yesJournal of Numerical Analysis and Approximation Theory, 2012
We provide semilocal result for the convergence of Newton method to a locally unique solution of an equation in a Banach space setting using hypotheses up to the second Fréchet-derivatives and our new idea of recurrent functions.
