An assay for the mannan-binding lectin pathway of complement activation
Journal of Immunological Methods, 2001The mannan-binding lectin (MBL) pathway of complement activation has been established as the third pathway of complement activation. MBL is a carbohydrate-binding serum protein, which circulates in complex with serine proteases known as mannan-binding lectin associated serine proteases (MASPs).

The mannan-binding-lectin pathway of the innate immune response
Current Opinion in Immunology, 2001Dramatic progress has been achieved during the past year in our understanding of how the complement system is activated via the mannan-binding-lectin pathway. Surprising discoveries have changed our concepts of the complexes that are formed upon engagement of mannan-binding lectin with its serine proteases.

Mannan-binding lectin: clinical significance and applications
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - General Subjects, 2002Mannan-binding lectin (MBL) is a collectin (protein with both collagen-like and C-type lectin domains) synthesised in the liver and secreted into the bloodstream. Its plasma concentration is for the most part genetically determined by a series of allelic dimorphisms located both in the structural gene and in the promoter region.

The effect of mannan-binding lectin on opsonophagocytosis of Neisseria meningitidis
Immunopharmacology, 1997Mannan-binding lectin (MBL), an acute phase protein with a structure and a function very similar to that of C1q, is known to act as an opsonin binding to a number of microorganisms. In order to investigate the effect of MBL on the phagocytic killing of meningococci, a serogroup B meningococcal strain (H44/76) and its unencapsulated variant v24, as well

Genetic Epidemiology, 2006
AbstractThe lectin pathway of the complement system is activated when Mannan‐binding lectin (MBL) in complex with MASP‐2 binds microorganisms. Polymorphisms in both genes are responsible for low serum levels, which associate with increased risk of infection and autoimmune disease.

Mannan binding lectin and the sudden infant death syndrome
Forensic Science International, 1998Mannan binding lectin (MBL) may be important for innate immunity and some cases of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) may be preceded by bacterial infection. Therefore, relative MBL deficiency might be associated with susceptibility to SIDS. We measured MBL concentrations in 46 SIDS infants and 26 controls.

Mannan-Binding Lectin of the Sea Urchin Strongylocentrotus nudus
Marine Biotechnology, 2012A novel lectin specific to low-branched mannans (MBL-SN) was isolated from coelomic plasma of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus nudus by combining anion-exchange liquid chromatography on DEAE Toyopearl 650 M, affinity chromatography on mannan-Sepharose and gel filtration on the Sephacryl S-200.

Single-nucleotide polymorphisms in porcine mannan-binding lectin A
Immunogenetics, 2006The MBL1 and MBL2 genes encode mannan-binding lectins (MBL) A and C, respectively, that are collagenous lectins (collectins) produced mainly by the liver. Several single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the human MBL2 gene are responsible for various innate immune dysfunctions due to abnormal structure or expression of human MBL-C.

Mannan-binding protein, a complement activating animal lectin
Immunopharmacology, 1992Mannan-binding protein is an animal serum lectin (i.e. a molecule with the ability to bind specifically to certain carbohydrate structures). The relevant carbohydrate ligands are found on many pathogenic microorganisms. After binding to suitable carbohydrate ligands, mannan-binding protein is found to be an activator of the classical pathway of ...
