Marek's disease vaccines: A solution for today but a worry for tomorrow?

Vaccine, 2008
Marek's disease (MD) is a lymphoproliferative disease of chickens that, in the absence of control measures, is capable of causing devastating losses in commercial poultry flocks. MD has been successfully controlled by vaccination since 1968. However, vaccine efficacy has decreased concomitantly with the increase in virulence of Marek's disease virus ...

The stability of reconstituted Marek's disease vaccines

Journal of Biological Standardization, 1977
A selection of commercial turkey herpesvirus (HVT) vaccines and a standard preparation THV/7 were reconstituted in various diluents and examined for stability. Results confirmed the suitability of a diluent containing sucrose, phosphate, glutamate and albumin (SPGA) as a diluent for HVT vaccines and also demonstrated the poor stability of vaccines ...

Field Trials of Vaccines for Marek's Disease

Avian Diseases, 1971
SUMMARY Seventeen field trials involving 391,202 birds were carried out in North Georgia to evaluate experimental vaccines for Marek's disease. Herpesvirus vaccines of both turkey and chicken origin were found to be "safe" with respect to their lack of any oncogenic ability in vaccinated birds. However, only the turkey herpesviruses (Georgia strain WHG

A study of vaccination against Marek's disease with an attenuated Marek's disease virus

Avian Pathology, 1974
Approximately 2,000 day-old white leghorn chickens were distributed into 10 pens and half the pens vaccinated with the attenuated strain of HPRS-16. At 72 weeks of age, mortality from non-specific death and Marek's disease was 17.6% and 15.6% respectively, in vaccinated chickens compared with 14.2% and 51.7% in unvaccinated chickens.

Efficacy of a bivalent vaccine against Marek's disease

Research in Veterinary Science, 1987
A bivalent vaccine was prepared by combining inactivated Marek's disease virus and turkey herpesvirus. The efficacy of this vaccine, compared to turkey herpesvirus and inactivated Marek's disease virus separately, was studied in unsexed White Leghorn chicks which were vaccinated at one day old and then challenged at 21 days old with fowl blood infected

Duration of Vaccinal Immunity against Marek's Disease

Avian Diseases, 1978
Specific vaccinal immunity against Marek's disease (MD) virus was measured by a short-term challenge test in which chickens vaccinated with turkey herpesvirus (HVT) and control chickens at various ages up to 40 weeks were inoculated with virulent MD virus and evaluated 2 weeks later for microscopic lesions and MD viremia.
