Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) is the most common type of monogenic diabetes mellitus, estimated to account for approximately 1-4% of patients with diabetes. The predicted prevalence is, therefore, 20,000 patients in The Netherlands. Unfortunately less than 5% of these patients are confirmed by molecular genetic analysis.

Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY) is a familial form of non-insulin dependent diabetes with autosomal dominant inheritance. Hyperglycemia in MODY subjects usually develops at childhood, adolescence or young adulthood, and is associated with primary insulin-secretion defects (1, 2).

Maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY) is characterized by a primary defect in insulin secretion and hyperglycemia, nonketotic disease, monogenic autosomal dominant mode of inheritance, age at onset less than 25 years, and lack of auto-antibodies. It accounts for 2-5% of all cases of non-type 1 diabetes.
