Nutritional, phytochemical, and potential health benefits of Monostroma spp.: A systematic review

open access: yesFood Biomacromolecules, EarlyView.
Abstract Monostroma spp., belonging to the green seaweed, has been known to be health‐promoting food items as prophylactic agents worldwide. It has shown wide arrays of bioactivities for the prevention and treatment of various diseases. A total of 47 articles were selected to review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and ...

Systematic evaluation of suspension MDCK cells, adherent MDCK cells, and LLC-MK2 cells for preparing influenza vaccine seed virus

open access: yesVaccine, 2019
Suspension Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells (MDCK-N), adherent MDCK cells (MDCK-C), and adherent rhesus monkey kidney LLC-MK2 cells (LLC-MK2D) were systematically evaluated for the preparation of influenza vaccine seed viruses for humans on the basis of primary virus isolation efficiency, growth ability, genetic stability of the hemagglutinin (HA)

Broad-tailed force distributions and velocity ordering in a heterogeneous membrane model for collective cell migration

open access: yes, 2012
Correlated velocity patterns and associated large length-scale transmission of traction forces have been observed in collective live cell migration as a response to a "wound".

Chemical-free inactivated whole influenza virus vaccine prepared by ultrashort pulsed laser treatment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
There is an urgent need for rapid methods to develop vaccines in response to emerging viral pathogens. Whole inactivated virus (WIV) vaccines represent an ideal strategy for this purpose; however, a universal method for producing safe and immunogenic ...

Inhibition of influenza virus infection by garlic oil and juice in cell culture

open access: yesJSFA reports, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Influenza virus infections are a significant global health and economic burden. Garlic (Allium sativum) has been proposed to have antimicrobial properties. Raw garlic consumption has been widely advocated on the internet to fight influenza by many public health agencies, information of which is easily accessible by the public. There

LRP promotes endocytosis and degradation, but not transcytosis, of the amyloid-β peptide in a blood–brain barrier in vitro model

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2008
The pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by aggregation of the amyloid-β protein (Aβ) into neurotoxic plaques. Recent in vivo studies have suggested the non-proteolytic clearance of Aβ via receptor-mediated transport across the blood ...

Comparison of mutation patterns in full-genome A/H3N2 influenza sequences obtained directly from clinical samples and the same samples after a single MDCK passage. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Human influenza viruses can be isolated efficiently from clinical samples using Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells. However, this process is known to induce mutations in the virus as it adapts to this non-human cell-line.

Toward Dynamic Liquid Cell Scaffold: Photoreversible Ion Gels Exhibiting Light‐Induced Sol‐Gel Transitions

open access: yesMacromolecular Rapid Communications, EarlyView.
Light‐programmable, non‐cytotoxic ion gels based on ABC triblock copolymers undergo photoreversible sol‐gel transitions, crossing the rheological boundary (tan δ ∼ 1). UV–vis light irradiation modulates the lifetime of reversible junctions, switching the scaffold between liquid‐like and solid (gel)‐like states.

Production, Passaging Stability, and Histological Analysis of Madin–Darby Canine Kidney Cells Cultured in a Low-Serum Medium

open access: yesVaccines
Madin–Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells are commonly used to produce cell-based influenza vaccines. However, the role of the low-serum medium on the proliferation of MDCK cells and the propagation of the influenza virus has not been well studied.

Cellular Aggregation Facilitates Anoikis in MDCK Cells

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiological Sciences, 2008
Anoikis is a specific type of apoptosis caused by the detachment of anchorage-dependent cells from their supportive matrix. Aggregation of suspended cells is believed to suppress anoikis. Here we describe the effects of cellular aggregation on anoikis in Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells.
