The Paediatric BCG Vaccine Century: From Historical Success to Future Innovations

open access: yesActa Paediatrica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim The tuberculosis (TB) vaccine, Bacille‐Calmette‐Guérin (BCG), protects infants against severe forms of primary TB. Yet, it does not protect against pulmonary reactivation TB in adults. Methods A literature review was conducted between 1st January and 28th February 2025 using PubMed, Google Scholar and reports of the World Health ...

Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis in Europe, 2010–2011

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2015
Drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis is challenging elimination of tuberculosis (TB). We evaluated risk factors for TB and levels of second-line drug resistance in M. tuberculosis in patients in Europe with multidrug-resistant (MDR) TB.

Impact of Advanced Age on Posttransplant Infections and Outcomes in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients: A Multicenter Cohort Study

open access: yesTransplant Infectious Disease, EarlyView.
Advanced age (≥60 years) was independently associated with higher mortality in solid organ transplant recipients, despite similar infection incidence. Even a single infection episode significantly increased mortality risk, underscoring the need for close clinical monitoring in elderly patients.

Predictive Ability of Sonographic Characteristics Alone to Diagnose Tuberculous Pleural Effusions in a Resource‐Limited Setting: A Cross‐Sectional Pilot Study in Zambia

open access: yesTropical Medicine &International Health, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE), the second most common form of extra‐pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), remains difficult to diagnose due to low‐yield, invasive and often unavailable diagnostics in resource‐limited settings. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of sonographic characteristics alone to predict TB ...

Do we need to detect isoniazid resistance in addition to rifampicin resistance in diagnostic tests for tuberculosis? [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is resistant to both rifampicin (RIF) and isoniazid (INH). Whereas many TB diagnostics detect RIF-resistance, few detect INH-monoresistance, which is common and may increase risk of acquired MDR-TB.

Altered Pharmacokinetics and Delayed Sputum Conversion in Tuberculosis Patients Co‐Infected With HIV

open access: yesTropical Medicine &International Health, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background HIV co‐infection affects host responses and pharmacokinetics (PK) of tuberculosis (TB) treatment. This study assessed the PK of first‐line anti‐TB drugs and clinical outcomes in patients with and without HIV co‐infection. Methods In this prospective observational study, 61 adults with sputum‐positive pulmonary TB, either confirmed ...
